My great grandfather, Peter Farrelly, married Margaret Tevlin in Moynalty RC Church on 11 January 1850.  She was the daughter of Michael Tevlin and the former Anne Tuite.  Peter Farrelly's father was Thomas Farrelly, a teacher, and Peter was also a national schoolteacher.  Peter and Margaret moved to Clane in Co. Kildare after their marriage, where he became the village schoolteacher for many years until his retirement in 1887.  I would like to find out more about Peter Farrelly's father, Thomas Farrelly.  What was the name of Thomas's wife, and was Thomas a teacher in Moynalty or a different parish?

This may be the same Farrelly family mentioned by heylor56 in a previous message.

  • Many thanks for your message about Thomas Farrelly's family.

Moynalty church records commence in 1830. Unfortunately catholic civil records commenced in 1864. We need Peter baptism records on church records to obtain his mother's name.

Normally the first daughter was called after the maternal grandmother and the second daughter after the paternal grandmother, assuming the two ladies didn't have the same name. Have you traced all Peter and Margaret's children including any children that didn't survive.

www.rootsireland.ie has counties Meath and Cavan church records. There is no Peter born to Thomas in Co Meath on them, 1 record in Co Cavan. I did not identify the parish, as I do not have a valid subscription.  Farrelly is a very common Co Cavan name.

Do you know what parish/townland or date of birth or year of birth for Peter Farrelly.  Peter and Margaret would more than likely have got married in her parish. But people did not travel far for a spouse. Farrelly is a common name in our area. Tevlin is not common. I think i identified 2 area where Tevlins lived. I am not familar with familys in those areas. Can you provide any more info and I will make a few phone calls for more info. Moynalty Church records in 1800s, normally do not record addresses.

Have you found Peter's civil death cert. try www.familysearch.org. it will  have an appox date of birth. A funeral report or obituary - www.irishnewspaperarchives.com.  Have you found any descendants on the 1901 or 1911 irish census, so could work back from that - www.census.nationalarchives.ie.  Fr Valentine Farrell book "Not so much to one side" about Moynalty parish has no mention of a Thomas Farrelly teacher in 1835 Board of Education report for the parish schools. Have you been to the National Archives in Dublin. Vaguely, I recall seeing a list of school teachers. Check www.nationalarchives.ie for more info on what they hold on teachers.

On irish census - Co Meath, DED Moybolgue, townland Tirachorka, in 1901 house 5 and 1911 house 4 Anne Farrelly teacher -  any relation? This house is in the neighbouring parish of Kilmainhamwood and church records only commence in 1867.

I didn't identify the Peter Farrelly on the message left by heylor56. if you feel the info could resemble your family, please make contact with her.

From notes to the heylor56 and another family I was tracing, are the following 3 familys any of yours or do children names sound like your family names.

    1. Parents Michael Tevlin and Catherine Tuite - children: 1832 Margaret, 1838 Bidy, 1847 Catherine,

    2. Parents Michael Tevlin and Anne Tuite - child 1843 Simon. this might be a error and the mother could be Catherine, as above.

    3. Thomas Farrelly married to Sarah/Sally Rathbourne, children were 1850 Catherine, 1852 Patrick, 1855 Mary, 1858 Anne, 1860 John, 1863 Robert, 1866 Joseph, 1869 Elizabeth, 1873 Richard, 1875 Sarah Jane.

Sorry, I've more questions than answers for you at the moment. The further back in time you go, the info may just not be there. I feel, you are at the edge of that period.  My e-mail address is cmccormack_cmf@hotmail.com for further correspondence.

    Kind regards

  • Hi Catherine - Thank you so much for your very quick reply!   I have done quite a bit of research into the family of Peter Farrelly who married Margaret Tevlin in Moynalty on 11 January 1850.  Peter Farrelly died on 12 June 1902 in Kildare city and his death certificate shows that he died at the age of 82 of degeneration of the heart.  The informant was his second wife, Julia, formerly Coffey, who he married after the death of Margaret who died on 6 October 1876 age 46 in Clane, Co. Kildare.  Presumably Peter Farrelly would have been born about 1820.  I have a copy of his marriage certificate to Julia Coffey on 9 May 1878 in Clane, which shows he was a Widower and Schoolmaster, son of Thomas Farrelly, a Teacher.  Julia Coffey was shown as a Spinster and her profession shown as 'Trades', daughter of Thomas Coffey, a Builder.  This is where the information regarding his father and profession was obtained.  It is possible that Thomas Farrelly was a 'hedge teacher'.

Peter Farrelly and Margaret Tevlin had ten children:

    Margaret b. abt. 1853, Clane, d. 23 May 1869, Clane, of Tubercular Consumption;  Mary b. 8 June 1856, Clane, d. 4 July 1927, Edmonton,Middx;  Eliza b. 20 December 1857, Clane, (m.Joseph O'Brien 10 Feb.1897 in London);  Anne b. 27 August 1859, Clane, d. 13 May 1868 Clane of Consumption;  Patrick b. 16 April 1861 Clane, d. 19 May 1866 Clane;  Joseph b. 6 July 1862 Clane, d. 27 October 1942 in London (Joseph was my grandfather!);  Lucy b. 6 December 1863 Clane, d. 8 May 1900 in London;  Judith b. 9 January 1865 Clane, d. 3 February 1865 in Capdo, Clane, of Quinsy;  Kate b. 20 December 1866 Clane, d. 20 December 1866;  and Peter b. 23 May 1870 (I have not been able to find out what happened to this Peter, nor when he died).

Peter Farrelly and Julia Coffey had four children:

    Philip b. 11 January 1880 Clane, d. 27 May 1948 Kildare;  Julia (Juliet) b. 6 February 1881 Clane, d. 18 October 1918 in Kildare;   Richard Joseph b. 14 May 1882 Clane, d. 19 May 1937 Kildare;  and Patrick b. 8 July 1883 Clane.

Julia (Juliet) Farrelly went on to marry Thomas Lennon on 10 June 1901 at the RC Chapel of Kildare in the District of Kildare, he was the son of James Lennon a Land Steward, and her father was shown as Peter Farrelly a School Teacher.  Julia (Juliet) Lennon became Assistant Registrar of Births Marriages and Deaths and is shown as such on her father's death certificate.

I have also found the family on the 1901 and 1911 census.  On the 1901 census Peter Farrelly is shown as having been born in Meath, and was living with his wife and four children at 28 Barrack Street, Kildare.

A Church Baptism Record from the Irish Family History Foundation shows that Margaret Tevlin was baptised on 13 March 1832 in the RC Parish of Moynalty, and her parents were noted as Michael Tevlin and Anne Tuite.

I live in Hampshire, England, but have visited Ireland on two occasions.  On the first occasion I called in at the Clane Parish Office where they were kind enough to print out a list of the Farrelly family baptisms from their records, and on my second visit I went to Moynalty and saw the church where Peter and Margaret were married.  I also looked round the graveyards at both locations, but could not see any relevant Farrely/Tevlin graves, perhaps not surprising after such a long time.

It may well not be possible to research any further back due to the lack of records, but if there are any descendants of the family I would be interested to hear from them.

Thank you so much for your help Catherine.   Kind regards,  Maggie

  • Many thanks for the additional info. No sons names Thomas or Michael. Doesn't bode well for daughters been called after grandmothers. there is a gap between Margaret and Mary, which could be a miss or child not listed on baptism registrar.

I was reading up a few local history books. I'll scan a few maps and other info to give you background info on administration areas and school history in the parish another day. Try www.google.com/maps for locations you find in any searches to get familar with the area.

I made a few phones calls and still have a few more people to contact.

The Tevlin families have died out in Moynalty and the neighbouring parish of Kilbeg. There are still Tevlins in Carnaross parish.  On Griffith Valuations there was a Michael Tevlin in Hermitage a substantial farmer. He was probably connected to the Kilbeg Tevlins. James Tevlin in Billywood was a poet. I am awaiting more info on Tevlins of Billywood area. I wouldn't know the people of that side of the parish.

There are property records which run from griffith valuations 1855 forward to current times. Google Griffith Valuations for more info and select the askaboutireland website to get people on the circa 1855 reports in Moynalty, Kilbeg and Carnaross. its free . Other sites charge for Griffith info. Moynalty are dated approx 1855. unfortunatly to roll the records forward to modern time and see the transfer dates and people you have to go to the valuation office in Dublin or ask them to do the search for a fee. see www.valoff.ie for more info. on askaboutireland, Moynalty, Kilbeg and Carnaross parishes are in Co Meath, Barony of Lower Kells and the Union of Kells. when looking at farrellys also search on farley. for background on family name locations,  try http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname . don't pay the fee. after abit of digging, you arrive at the same info on www.askaboutireland.ie griffiths database.

Earlier property records are Tithe applotments. Moynalty is 1827. they list head of household only and  people who owned min 3 acres. If Thomas Farrelly was a teacher, I wouldn't expect to find him on it. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp for searches. google tithe applotments for more info on this rate charge on households. there is no link unfortunately from tithes to griffiths list 25 years later.

The census of 1901 and 1911 have the Kilbeg and Carnaross parish Tevlins on them.

I didn't try for Farrellys/Farley yet on the property or census records, as I expect more numerous. I'd hope Tevlin searches would through up a link to family and you could take it from there, if they have family historian...

I tried civil and church death records. There is a Michael Tevlin in Moynalty 1848, but a child was born that year , so it might be him. 1847 was the worst year of the famine also. church death records are not a complete list. on www.familysearch.org, I found a Thomas Farrelly civil death cert in kells district, died 1869, born circa 1875. on www.rootsireland.ie it list this cert as a moynalty death. unless it states he's a teacher, it might not be Peter father. You could buy it on roots ireland or i recommend if you have someone in Dublin, sent them to the GRO (general registrar office) in Werburgh st. they will need the following info - name, event type, year, quarter if applicable, reg district, volume number and page number to locate it. cost is €4.  Else contact head office in Roscommon town for a copy of the original. http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/General-Register-Office.aspx for more info and there pricing structure.  There was no church burial record to match it.  I'll drop into the parochail house and do more searchs for you, maybe next week.

I checked the old graveyard in Moynalty around the now closed Church of Ireland (currently the credit union office). Protestants and catholics buried hear until it closed in 1900. the current catholic graveyard opened that year. In a survey of the old Moynalty graveyard in 1994, no tevlin headstones where found, there were two farrelly ones, but no address on them. Alot of plots have no headstone, and plenty are unreadable.  If Tevlins came from Kilbeg parish, its possible the family burial plot is in Robertstown old cemetary, now closed. Again, very few headstones there. The tevlin the other side of the parish, may have buried in Loughan old cemetary which is just inside Carnaross parish boundary with Moynalty, again closed, but a decent amount of headstones and readable in it.

  • Hi Maggie,

Hope you keeping well and still on your family history quest.

I got more info on the poet James Tevlin of Billywood, the side of the parish I do not know. His grand or Gt grand nephew's family (Gaynors) still reside in Billywood. My contact is going to talk to them. These Tevlin were also substantial farmers, but where "relieved" of most of it. They managed to hang onto or get back 20 acres. he wrote alot of satorical poety, so it was never published. The family donated it to Moynalty Threashing Museum a few years ago, I've been told.

I forgot to ask my contact if these and the current Carnaross parish family are connected. Billywood is on the borders of Carnaross.

I also found a 3rd group of Tevlin families in a different end of the parish in the townland of Carnaville. I'm trying to make contact with their descendants, who've moved on from Moynalty parish decades ago.

I was at a history talk a few nights back on 5 famine era poets of North Meath, where James Tevlin was briefly discussed. It was generally felt from a Q & A session that alot of famine era poets, may have been teachers, as a vast marority of the population could not read or write.

I still have to send you maps and hedge school stuff I promised from local history books. A snail would be faster than us Moynalty historians ....

    Regards
