Can anyone please help me.  I'm looking for a marriage between Joseph and Kate Walsh from Oldcastle Joseph born about 1873 he died in Oldcastle 1947, his wife Kate died in 1954 Oldcastle.  They had 3 sons John Joseph born 1903 (I think) and my grandad Peter born 1905, their youngest son was born after the 1911 census.  The 1911 census shows Joseph and Kate Walsh both born in Meath and their 2 sons are both born in West Meath.  I know when both sons sailed to America, the shipping form shows their place of birth as  in Carn.

The 1911 census address is 7 Fennor Lower, Oldcastle Meath.  I know from my dad and his sisters the address was Rudagh in Oldcastle.  I have searched and searched for a marriage for Joseph and Kate Walsh but have been unable to find this!!  All I know is Kate had an older sister called Lizzie who married a farmer as my dad remembers staying on Lizzies farm for the holidays when he was younger.  If anyone can give me some advice or help it would be very much appreciated. I'm guessing that the year of Kate and Joseph Walsh marriage would have been about 1902.

Thanks very very much

Cathy

  • Cathy,

There are 3 townlands called Carn in Westmeath. 1 is in Mullingar?s civil registration area and the other 2 within Granard?s. I think the two births may be as follows:

John Joseph Walsh regd Granard Jul ? Sept 1904 Vol 3, page 117

    Peter Walsh, Granard Jul ? Sept 1905 , Vol 3, page 129.

Not sure if you picked up from the 1911 census, they had been married 8 years so around 1902/3 as you have suggested. They also had another child born before 1911, which had died by that year.

If you order either of the birth certs it should give you Kate?s maiden name which may make your search for their marriage a bit easier. It will also help you identify which Carn the children were born in.

You can order a photocopy from GRO Roscommon for ?4 per certificate. Put the place, year, quarter (where there is one), volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). http://www.groireland.ie/ You have to post or fax the form to them but they will e-mail the copy certificate to you if you wish. Put ?please e-mail to?..? clearly on the top of the form.
