County Meath, barony Fore, union Oldcastle, parish Loughcrew, townland and placename Knockbrack, place type Townland.

Gives as tenants of James Naper, John, Thomas, William and Rose Kiernan. Any of 3 males could have father of Michael aged c.30+ in 1831 who (I assume) was my great-great grandfather .

Hi,

I am a descendent of the same family you mention here. My ancestor is James Kiernan of Old Castle, my great great grandfather. RC parish records show he was baptised in 1834, parents Thomas Kiernan and Mary Magoveran.

His family indeed moved to New York. However I was unaware of sibblings accompanying him. James married into the Creamer family, also of Meath. 

Many of the Creamers are buried at EverGreens Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY, and many of the Kiernans are at Rosedale Cemetery in Montclair, NJ.

I would love to hear more about your Kiernan research.

Brian, I did not appreciate enough your response the first time I saw it but now that I have had my AncestryDNA results back and have further studied my roots in Co Meath, I think we may be related. I believe my ancestors came from the townland of Milltown which is adjacent to Knockbrack. Also my DNA suggests I have common ancestors who emigrated to Australia sometime in the 1875's-1900's. Up until now I did not think I had any relativs other than those that came to USA. I would be interested in learning more about when your family came to Australia and why you believe your ancestor is Michael Kiernan from Knockbrack. My ancestors came to NYC Manhattan pre-1850.

GW Dillman     I think I have the right author of this request.   I did not contact you personally because I am not a relative and don't want to be drawn into a long search.  I have been searching Oldcastle and Milltown recently.  I would like to advise you  of the following MvGovern return in a search of the Meath tithes  -all 1826 and all only a few kilometres south of Oldcastle, which is variably an administrative use of the word.

I can also advise that, if you search the Tithes, you will find a Henry Lynch  on the list at Milltown in 1826.  I have come across a Henry Lynch, who died in Oldcastle much later, who was born in 1803.  However, I feel this man would have been too young to hold a Tithe in 1826.  However, if Henry Lynch, ( 1826) was in his 30s or 40s or older, as a son, born in 1803 would indicate, it would appear that he was dead before 1845.   You now have the sum total of my knowledge. Your inclusion of Henry Lynch suggested I might be able to help your McGovern request.

My apologies.  I re-read your request.  If you check the Tithes, you will find that Phil McGovern and Henry Lynch are neighbours of a James and John Kiernan. All are in Milltown, with variable acreages, Henry Lynch appearing to be wealthier? than the other three.  To do this click on any name and bring up the page image.

I am not sure what my connection is to Kiernan but I have a couple of DNA matches that go back to Milltown, Oldcastle Meath.  I also have some unknown Magauran/ McGovern matches.

My known relatives Michael Cannon from Dernahyltemore, Leitrim, Ireland and Bridget Stretton from Miskaun Glebe, Leitrim.  Michael O'Donnel and Ann Duke from Mohill, Leitrim.

Lynn I am connected to both the Kiernan ( Thomas ) and McGovern families in Milltown, Oldcastle. My Ancestry DNA name is gerrydillmann. How do you know you have unknown McGovern matches. I believe i am related to Owen & Philip McGovern who lived in Milltown and emigrated to NYC. Philip married Cahterine Kiernan in NYC and had extensive family. Other relatives from this family include: Murtha, Haffran, Cavanagh, Mordaunt, Compton, Meehan, Ware, Sarter, and Callahan. If any of these surnames are in your tree, this could nbe the connection.

I've never seen McGovern as a variant speling for McGaughran, but Im sure it might be possible.
