Happy St. Patrick's Day!!
I have researched and found that my 3rd great grandfather, James Murphy, according to the 1891 England Census, was born in Monaghan, Ireland. The census shows his age as 65, which would put his birth around 1826. Since it appears that Irish census records were destroyed for that period, I may have to depend on local parish and/or family records. The same 1891 England census record shows "Margaret (believed to be) Fitzsimmons", as his wife. Her birth city is either Dundee or Glasgow, Scotland. My 2nd great grandmother (daughter of James and Margaret), Sarah E. Murphy migrated to Fall River, Mass. I would like to know more about my Irish heritage, through James. Can you help?

Were your Murphys from Aghabog parish or did you just pick out that parish. If they were from Aghabog, the bad news is that church records do not start until 1871.

Thank you for the prompt reply. The information, contained in the attached 1891 England census page, is the only guide I have had to find the exact (James Murphy) birth location. I will go back and see if there is more than one parish for the town/city of Monaghan. Either way, my research may have come to a temporary road block.

You evidently have your ancestors in the 1891 census. Have you traced them back in earlier censuses? That might help confirm some of the information. What do you know of James Murphy’s occupation? Was he a musician by any chance? If so, I think I can see the family in the 1871 Scottish census and can give you his marriage details.
