Wheels going round and round. Michael Gavin married Rosanna Flanagan here in Buffalo, NY in 1852. His sister, Catherine, married Patrick McCabe 23 Feb, 1843, Aghabog Parish. She is listed as being from Kilmore Parish. There were 8 Gavin siblings. Bridget, John, James, Joseph, Michael, Patrick, Mary and Catherine. I don't know the order, as it changes with every census. All between 1820 and 1835. Michael's headstone says Co. Monaghan, but John's says Straid, Co. Mayo. Mary was married to Terrence Farmer.

Catherine's daughter, Alice McCabe was born in Ireland abt. 1847, and daughter Mary was born in NY, 1852. This is my window of immigration. I am working with two other families here in the Buffalo area for the McCabe link and the Flanagan link, and we all keep coming back to the Aghabog/ Aghaboy area. Any help in finding specifics would be greatly appreciated. It's possible their parents were Joseph and Bridget, but I don't know for sure, so any baptismal info that verify/ deny would be great.

    Unfortunately, RC records for Aghabog parish in Monaghan and Templemore parish in Mayo which includes Straide both start in the early 1870s based on what I see on the NLI site http://registers.nli.ie/   Gavin/Gavan is primarily a Mayo name.

    Was the marriage record for Patrick and Catherine from Aghabog church?

  • The church record is from Drumsnat and Kilmore parish. Microfilm 05575/07. I can read the names patrick McCabe and Catherine Gavan, but the parents appear to be ? Gavin and Maria. I have two different families here in Buffalo, trying to use this record, but I don't think we are actually going to be related. He has a will stating son John McCabe returned to Aghaboy to claim land inherited from cousin, and that father patrick went with him, and that patrick died in 1901. I have Catherine in Buffalo in 1860, listed as a widow. I went to Aghabog, and spoke to Peg Gavan, who said her husband, Mick, said his family was from Mayo. The guy I am working with here thinks the McCabes are from Aghaboy. I just recently realized this was not the same place. Every Gavin record I can find in Monaghan comes back to Kilmore/Aghabog/Latnamard area. We are trying to find death certificates to see if parents are listed, to see if they match. the fact that the two headstones in the same cemetery, of what I think are brothers lists one as Mayo and on as Monaghan, justs adds to the confusion. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Those two names are witnesses not parents.I have never seen parents names on RC marriage records.

    Looks like the first witness is Patrick Gavan. I can't make out the surname for Maria. looks like it starts with a G.

  • Nancy,  Just read your posts.  I am having the same trouble trying to trace my Gavin ancestor Patrick Gavin in Co. Mayo.  All I know from his Death Register in Eastchester, NY is that his parents names are James and Mary Gavin and my Dad tells me they are from Co. Mayo.  My DNA pin points me to the Turlough and Templemore Parishes so I will try and narrow my searches there.  My reason for responding to your post is I ran across this tombstone that I found in Straid Abbey Cemetery, Templemore Parish, Co. Mayo (see attached below).  I know the name looks like John Cavin instead of Gavin, but look at the G in the two words AGED, they both look like Cs also, so I do believe it is in fact a G.  Don't know if it helps any, but it does seem to contain the names that you were looking for.  Hope it helps.  Patty Gavin Underwood
