mark i discovered this recently and it seems to tie in with message 1

rick and wayne have a record of a joseph detcher and grace from scotland marrying does this tally 

and does this cancel one of our lines of research for the dycher louth line

Yes, Joseph and Grace are the couple who went to Canada, Ontario, Toronto area. The family of Samuel located at Glen and Thomas at Drumvulla are I think part of a single extended group. The people at Boyer, Drumlona, Rockcorry, Co. Cavan, Cootehill area, and Gortlana also belong.

The question re: tithe entry Glen is whether Joseph is the son of Samuel, or his brother. In the earlier Ematris records, Samuel Dicher and Joseph Ditcher are both the sons of Thomas Dicher/Ditcher.

The family at Gortlana seems to descend from a William Dycher and (I think) Bridget [surname unknown]. The is a Joseph Dycher who married a Rebecca Quin in Cavan - I think these are the parents of Thomas and John, where Thomas is still living there at time of 1901 Census of Ireland.

There is also a Robert Dicher who settled at Rathvully in Co. Wicklow. He might be important re: Thomas 1791-1867. He had a son John b.1774 who had a son William b.1798 who has a daughter called Alicia.

Again the name Alicia. I think surname of THE Alicia (the one who married Thomas 1791-1867) was Tierney. Alicia and Mathew are both forenames found in the Tierney family, but there is no evidence of either in the Dycher family prior to Thomas marrying Alicia.

Following the naming tradition of the period - where older children were named after the parents/grandparents of the father/mother and younger children the siblings - the point at which a new name enters the line is important because generally people at that time did not name their children at random - everybody was named after an existing somebody.

Alicia of course enters the Dycer line circa 1830's, same also for William (son of John son of Robert), who named his child Alicia around the time. William's family changed there name to Deaker.

I think phonetics might be at play here. Consider the names: Daker, Deaker, Deetcher, Detcher, etc., then think of the Northern Irish pronunciation of ditch and dike. There is I think a valid connection.

From the earlier Ematris records, Hugh Ditcher is the son of James, there is also a Hugh Daker who died 1802 (as far as I can make out) in Limerick. There is also a George Daker (ref: George Ditcher son of Thomas in Ematris records) who died in Killarney.

Are we looking at a pattern of dispersal here?

Still no joy with the ever elusive baptismal record for Thomas 1791-1867, but there are also records for Dacre (if it's relevent) in Abbeyleix.

Liam, to date we have transcribed approximately 30 out of 47 graves at Clonmelsh. The group intend on revisiting the graveyard on Thursday the 4 September to complete the recording. So far we have come across the name Dycher on the recorded headstones.

Apologies for the previous email seems to have been incorrect. It was supposed to read that we have not located any Dychers on the headstones as yet, but should complete the recording by next week and will know for sure whether there are any people of that surname buried there. Sorry for the confusion Liam.

discovered this only today 

roots ireland have recorded marraiges for ematris on their files along with some other monaghan parishes  i cant access them but maybe they have records for some of the familiy members you have on your file     the years are i think 1770s-1780s and 1840s onwards or something like that from memory 

mark have a look at parish of castlerahan in county cavan under richard dichare and john dicher  

do you know about these or are they new to you and your line
