    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

What was the religious denomination of the Pattens in Ireland? The RC records for baptisms start in November 1835 for Monaghan town and I looked on the register which was in Latin and did not see a record for Robert. If he was Chruch of Ireland, the records are held locally and you could write to the parish http://clogher.anglican.org/Parishes/index.php?p=monaghan&pg=29

As an aside, I was not sure whay information you were looking for. Do you have the baptismal recorf?

The 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Monaghan parish does not show a James Patten but there were three Patton records including two in Lismacrerk townland.

Thank you for your prompt reply and feedback.  Most of the information for Robert Patten comes from his Military records and Obit published in 1903.  States he was born in Monahon County, Ireland in 1836.  No confirmed details on parents or other family members.  Current information obtained from Ancestry, may not be correct.

He came to America in 1852, at age 16 and worked in York State, and moved to Illinois  and Iowa.

No sure what the religious denomination of the family.

I am looking for any information that might connect Robert Patten with his family in Ireland.  At this point I have not been able to obtain or confirm any birth information from Ireland.

    Thank you

  • Hi Nelson,

I believe my 4x great grandmother Mary, 1805-1890, married to David Lemon, was a Patten from Monaghan. The Pattens moved from Scotland to Monaghan in the 1700s, and a large number of Pattens emigrated from Monaghan to Somonauk, Illinois. They were Presbyterians. I thought you may be interested in the following document. The Pattens are mentioned on page 207 onwards. Hopefully you may find your Pattens there too.
