Hello; I am seeking info on the family of John Murray, b. 25 Oct 1848 to James & Margaret Murray

Naturalization papers indicate:

  • County Monaghan
  • Immigrated to Boston in 1864

Catholic order of Forester's application dated 1884:

  • Parents alive in Ireland: father James, approx age 87, mother Margaret approx age 67, 1 sister (? name, age)
  • John working as a liquor dealer

John b. 1848 may have lived in Boston w/John Murray, tinsmith, b. 1805 ? d. 1872 Boston.

Many thanks,

Stephanie Murray

  • Dear Stephanie

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the long delay in getting back to you!

Have you had a look on ancestry.com, rootsireland.ie or familysearch.org for Monaghan records? There is a baptism in 1845 in Co. Monaghan for an Andrew Murray born to a father James and a mother first name Margaret. As rootsireland.ie is a subscription site, I am limited in what I can see. As there is only one record though, it might be a good idea to have a look.

    You should also check the:

    Tithe Applotment Books:  http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation:  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Let us know if you learn anything from the above sites.

    Best wishes

  • Hello Clare and thanks; yes, there are numerous Griffith's and Tithe records for James Murray in Monaghan.  No idea if any are the one that I'm seeking though.  I have only found 1 marriage for a James & Margaret (Fetherson) in Knockcroghery, Roscommon, 12 Apr 1846.  No luck with Monaghan records.

i have amended my original post, focused more on Monaghan.  Recent analysis of info in U.S. indicates that sibling group in Roscommon is not connected to the James I am seeking.

Many thanks for any and all suggestions!

    Stephanie
