 Family name I am intereted in is AYLMER.

2nd GGfather Thomas J Aylmer born in Mullingar in 1841 with twin sister Elizabeth.                                  Married Ellen Sweeney 11 Feb 1860 in Edenderry, Parish Edenderry & Leighlin.                                            They had a son Peter Aylmer (1861) and son James Joseph(1863).                                                               Ellen died when James was born. James was baptised Parish Edenderry & Rhode.

Thomas, his twin Elizabeth, sister Margaret and son Peter left for the US. (1863ish)                                       James was left behind. James came to the US July 12, 1881 on the Richmond, steerage class.                  James is my Great Grandfather.

Would love help with the Aylmer family... how common were twins in the 1840s? How do you leave a newborn behind? Who do you leave the child with?

  • Hi Tara,

    James was probably left in Ireland with grandparents or an aunt and uncle. Maybe he had been living with them since birth. Sometimes the plan was to get settled in the new place and then send for the child. I've seen such cases in my research.

    In James's case, he was a baby. Who would care for the baby on the other side? How would a baby fare during  the voyage to the U.S.?  These things were probably taken into consideration.

  • Griffith's Valuation of Offaly, 1851-52, showed one Aylmer in Offaly. If your Thomas was born in 1841, this would not be him. Perhaps his father?
