I have located a photo of my Great Grandfather Dr William John Shortt and it is written Killarney 1927. At the time of this photo he had returned to Ireland to show off his granddaughter (my mother) to his sisters that still lived in Ireland.  However my suspicion is that it is actually Killoughy, as I found a property in Cappagowlan in Griffiths Valuation and John Shortt (Barrister) was the lessor.  Dr William John Shortt's military record also shows his place of birth as Cappagowlan.  I am wondering how I would be able to establish from Griffith's valuation the exact location of the property where he was born as I would like to visit it in the future?

  • Sorry I meant to mention that John Shortt (Barrister) was his father.

  • Hello Sue,

thank you for your enquiry. I am not quite sure as to your query.

From Griffiths, it is possible to find the exaxt location of lands and houses using the numbers and letters of Reference on the pages with the corresponding map.

However, for your John Short, I only see that he leased lands in Cappagowlan but not where he himself lived. So we can find all the land and houses he rented out to the tenants but not where he lived himself.

  • I recently found an article that described him as John Shortt of Cappagowlan House, Frankford.  Does anyone know if this house remains?  Thanks.

  • Hi Sue

Welcome! I am not aware of this house but wonder if you might be able to locate it on the OSI Maps. They take a little bit of time to master but are a great source. The house might be located on one of their historic maps.

You can take a look HERE - just above the price list on their site

    Best wishes
