Hi, I have been searching for my ANCESTORS now for a lot of years.I am trying to find  my GGGrandfather Michael Kelly and his wife Catherine O'Neill. They were living and had all their Children in a place called Clonfean outside of Dunmore.I read somewhere that in the famine they moved to Rosscommon and named the place they moved too after Clonfean in Dunmore. Can anyone verify this because if it is true maybe this is why it has taken me a lot of years to find them.I know Michael and Catherine were not born or married in Dunmore as they have no record of them only all the children's Baptisms who are as follows. Sarah 1835,Bridget 1835,Patrick1837,John1838-1839,John my GGrandfather 1840,Michael 1843 and Mary1845.They were baptised at Dunmore RC church. If anyone can help i would be so grateful.I thank you for your time.

  • Dear Waterlilly

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your query.

In relation to your search you could consider looking at www.familysearch.org or www.rootsireland.ie (a subscription site) to see if you can find any information about your Kelly ancestors. As I am sure you are aware, the start dates for records in parishes in Ireland vary, depending on the parish, but you may be lucky enough to find some record of the Kelly family, despite the early time frame of your search. Some background information can be found at the link below:

    http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/parish-records-marriage-licences/

As an aside, there is a small village called Cloonfad not far from Dunmore. Dunmore is in Co. Galway and Cloonfad is in Co. Roscommon, so this could be the reason why your search is difficult. In fact Cloonfad borders 3 counties; Mayo, Roscommon and Galway. You could try using the above websites to search all three counties. Another suggestion is to search the Griffith?s Valuation records on the link below, as it may provide some information about the Kelly family if they leased land, as they probably did during the 1850s:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

While the Cloonfad theory is just a suggestion, it may be worth looking into further. The Roman Catholic records for Dunmore begin in 1833 as you can see from the link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseact…;

The Roman Catholic records for Kiltullagh (the parish where Cloonfad is located) begin in 1839

Best of luck with your search

  • Hi Clare, sorry I have taken so long in replying to you as I have just got your message.Thank you so much for your reply to my Kelly family. The thing is I have tried all the info you have sent me to no avail. The place where my family lived is deffo Clonfean as it is on all of the children's baptisms.also fathers name Michael Kelly and Mother Catherine O'Neill. I just can't find any trace of them after or before that.I have paid a fortune through Ancestry and Genes reunited to try and find them ,also Jesus Christ site that was free.I do know that one of the children John born 1840 came to the North East of England and lived in JARROW.He was my GGGrandfather. I do not know what happened to the other children.Kind Regards . Rose Woodall (nee Kelly)

  • Dear Rose

I see from a quick internet search that you have been following this Kelly family for some time now without much success. As a veteran researcher at this stage, I assume that you have checked all of the relevant records for Counties Galway and Roscommon not just Dunmore?

Also, you say in your original post that you read about the family moving, can you recall where this information came from?

    Regards

  • Dear Waterlilly

I spoke to someone from Dunmore last night in relation to Clonfane/Clonfeane. They didn?t recall any Kelly family living in the area (which isn?t surprising given the dates involved), but she confirmed that Clonfane is situated near the townland of Garrafrauns on the road towards Irishtown.  As the records for Dunmore begin in 1833, this should be early enough to record the Kelly children (but this doesn't seem to be the case). If I hear anything more I will let you know

    Best wishes

  • Hi again

Ask as many questions as you need, that?s what we are here for!

This attached link shows a map of the Roman Catholic Parishes in East Galway. As you can see, Dunmore is a Roman Catholic Parish where records begin in 1833:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/galwayerc.htm

Dunmore village and the surrounding area make up the RC parish. Does that make sense?
