My mother's family, Hanly, was from Derreen, Ballinagare, Co Roscommon. I had an uncle - Francis born in Derreen in 193? or there abouts, he only lived for a few months/years?

i only decided to do the tree after my mum passed, so I can't ask her. i only learnt about Francis after my mum's death :-(

My father's family, Mitchell, were from Ballyglass, Bllinagare, Co Roscommon.

I'm in the middle of doing both sides of the trees. i only get free hints, can't pay for membership. So any help would be gratefully received.

Many Thanks

Mary

  • Hi:

My great grandparents were Thomas and Maria (nee. Conry) Hanly.  They lived in Derreen.  Perhaps we're related?

  • Good afternoon to whoever wrote that last message, I'd like to hear from you again, the people you named were my grandparents, so yes it's very likely we are related.

Could you give me the names of your parents?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you very soon.

    Regards

    Mary

  • Hi:

My grandfather moved to Canada around WW1.  My mother was Jane Hanley.  She passed away a couple of years ago.   Her sister, Nora, visited one of his older sisters in Galway in the 1960s.  I also met a Tom Hanley and his wife when I visited Wales in the late 1990s.  I think that he was my mother's first or 2nd cousin.

I'm pretty sure that this is his family.  His name was Edward and he would have been 10 at the time of the 1901 census.  Perhaps it is a typo or that he wasn't at the home at the time.  Based on his birth certificate, his parents name on the certificate, the fact that he was one of 13 children and this census - I'm pretty sure that they are my great grandparents.  The 1911 census indicated that Thomas and Maria had 13 children.

What is also interesting, is that the names on these 2 documents are pretty much the same, but show that the ages are not 10 years apart.  I'm wondering if this is due to inaccuracy by the census taker.  I find is suspicious that the children on the 1901 census are exactly 2 years apart.  Perhaps these were guesses because the parents weren't at home or something else.  I'm thinking that Edmund was supposed to be Edward because of this.

I'm wondering how we can connect privately as I'm new to this site and haven't figured it out yet.  If you're on Facebook, let me know and I can search for your profile.

    Very Best.
