My GGF Daniel McGowan was born about 1840 in Roscommon Co.  The name of his father was either Dominic or Thomas McGowan (hard to make out the father's name on Daniel's marriage cert.).

Daniel had a brother called "Harry."

Daniel married Bridget Murray (daugh of Thomas Murray) in New Castle Upon Tyne, Eng.  Soon after, they emigrated to Archbald, Pa, USA arriving there abt 1867.

Any help in locating the names of Daniel McGowan's parents and his townland of birth would be greatly appreciated.

I will respond to all three of your messages here. I just checked www.rootsireland.ie  which is a pay site. They have two baptismal records in Co. Roscommon. One for a Daniel McGowan in 1840 and the other for a Daniel Magowan in 1842. It may be worthwhile to join roots and pay to look at the actual records. The parents's names should be listed.

Regarding the 1901 and 1911 census records. The Edward McGowan family is living in Tumna townland, Tumna civil parish. The district electoral division where they lived was Killukin. Your first message indicated that they lived in Killukin townland. Do you have any records which mentions the townland or the parish for the McGowans?

  • Roger - Thanks so much for your prompt reply.  Nothing I have indicates the townland in Roscommon where Daniel McGowan was born.  He was my mother's maternal grandfather and her mother just told her that her father came from Roscommon.  His year of birth comes from his marriage record and the ages given in the US Census Records.

There was an Edward McGowan age 50 in 1901 with a wife, Mary, age 36 and I think their townland was Cleaheen.  The other Edward McGowan was married to a Margaret & they have sons Thomas and Michael.  They appear in both the 1901 and 1911 Census in Killukin townland.  In the 1911 Census, Killukin is mis-spelled as Killusken.

I will follow up with Rootsireland.ie and get those two baptismal records for Daniel McGowan, starting with the 1840 record first.

Again, thank you for your help.
