I am a LOOBY descendant who recently found through DNA that I am related somehow to a LOOBY family that was known to be in the Kildanoge Ballybacon area as early as 1802.

Specifically looking for any other living descendants of a William LOOBY and his wife Maria Donohue.

William was born c1802 and died in Kildanoge in 1896

Ref:  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1897/05870/4664551.pdf

William Looby and Maria Donohue married in 27 Feb 1840 (Ardfinnan).  They had at least 5 children that I know of:

Edmond Looby 1841–

John Looby 1842–1930 (Married Kate DUNLEA)

Michael Looby 1844–1938 (Married Margaret PRENDERGAST)

William Looby 1848–1925 (went to Nebraska, USA; name changed to LUBY; Married Bridget LONERGAN)

Margaret Looby 1848–1902 (Married William KIELY; surnames in this line BURKE, HEFFERNAN)

William Looby appears on Griffiths Valuation in Kidanoge / Ballybacon Parish.  There is a Denis Looby listed right below him.  How do you tell if they were related?  Are they father and son? or brothers?

How do I find a baptism record for William for this early (1802) of a date?  Are there any baptisms that early?

My direct ancestor was Bridget Looby aka LUBY and she was born abt 1808; married Thomas SHANAHAN in 1833 in Powerstown, Tipperary.  Had first child Denis Shanahan in Powerstown in 1834; 2nd child Michael 1838 in Holycross and then the family moved to Limerick City where they had 3rd child Margaret and 4th child Thomas.  They died there during the famine leaving the children orphaned.  Bridget is the right age to be a possible sibling to William LOOBY from Kildanoge Ballybacon...but how would I prove it?

Anyone who lives in the area currently that descends from LOOBY, KIELY, DONOHUE, PRENDERGAST, DUNLEA, BURKE or HEFFERNAN that has done any DNA testing?

Any help much appreciated.

  • Hi Kathy,

I'm a volunteer with Ireland Reaching Out - in the Parish of Roscrea Co. Tipperary.  Kildanoge is a new venture for me - I had trouble locating it.  I have yet to find the actual Parish it belongs to - I'll check it out.  I did find this bit of information on the web https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_townlands_of_County_Tipperary which has this information on the locality: Townland: Kildanoge Acres: 2,676 Barony Iffa and Offa West Civil parish: Ballybacon Poor law union: Clogheen.  The town land is only just over 4 square miles (640 Acres per Square Mile), so it's quite possible that there's a lot of inter-relationships within that area.

The civil parishes and the church parishes don't actually match up in name - the church one could be a lot different.  The reason I put this information to you, is to help, if I can, to find any available church records.  There may be records going back as far as 1802, but not in all parishes.  I did a quick search on Roots Ireland and the only William Looby that came up was one Baptised in on April 28th 1799 in St. Mary's Parish Clonmel.  His father was William Looby and his mother Margaret Looby.  Without knowing for sure, this person could be the William you're looking for - the parish record is available free to download here: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632161#page/16/mode/1up - it would depend on how near Kildanoge is to Clonmel; he could have moved there from Clonmel, but we can't be sure.  I took the initiative and downloaded the record for you.  I also highlighted it on the page.  You'll find it a bit difficult to read as it is written in Latin - the language of the church Guli is short for Guilielmus - Latin for William.

. My knowledge of the area in question is limited, but I'll do what I can.

  • Thanks for your interest and your help.  Clonmel is quite some distance from Kildanoge - abt 134 kilometers

Kildanoge (also spelled Kildanganoge) is a townland is in the Civil Parish of Ballybacon in Co Tipperary.
It's corresponding church parish is Ardfinnan in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore
