I believe that my great-great grandparents Edward/Edmund O'Connor/Connor and Mary O'Farrell/Farrell were in Bansha parish about 1860.  They had six children and Catherine, one of those children was baptised in Bansha church.  Mary and family emigrated to Australia in 1862 (?) and two of the children, James and Patrick later left for New Zealand about 1869.  James is my great-grandfather.

My wife and nephew and I will be travelling to Ireland in July.  We will be visiting Tipperary and would like to visit the church and graveyard and possibly find some relatives.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

  • Hi John,

Last September when my daughter and I visited Tipperary and cousins in  Bansha, we discovered a heritage centre.

It is Daltons Heritage and Visitor Centre located in Tipperary Town, not far from Bansha.  It is called Daltons because that is the name of the building that was a shop/residence that existed in 1899.  Check out this website -  http://myinfo.ie/Daltons/

It is not open all the time but you can contact Michael O'Meara who can give you a tour.  Email:  mikeomears48@yahoo.ie.  Telephone 867218748.  Address:  102 St. Michaels Avenue, TIpperary Town, Co. Tipperary E34 XN70.  There is a huge database of burials from the area that can be searched by Mike beforehand.  I would contact him to find out the cost.

Nearby we can recommend the Ach Na Sheen Bed and Breakfast.  http://www.achnasheen.ie/

It was convenient with lovely hosts and a fantastic breakfast.  The community room had some great books on Tipperary - books where the local people donated pictures of relatives, etc.

  • Hi John

Cath Connors of Ed Connors & Mary Farrell was baptised in Bansha RC Church on the 22 Oct 1836 sponsors were Jas (James ) & Mary Keating

Ellen her sister was baptised 16 May 1846 in Bansha RC Sponsors John Farrell & Honora Meager

I will have to do some double checking but I believe that some records relating to your family were transcribed incorrectly .

I see a marraiage for Ed Cart & Mary Farrell 13 Jan 1836 witnesses John & Will Ryan & John farrell

Also there is a baptism for Edward of Ed Cant ( not a Bansha name) & Mary Farrell sponsors Patt Loughman & Mary Giran

Looking at land records on Griffith Valuation there is an Ed (all Varients ) Connors in

    Ballygorteen Clonbullogue.

    Ballydavid

    Ballinlough / Barnlough

    Ballyviggane

I know that Connors were in Ballinlough / Ballydavid  till recent times - but no Connors recorded in Ballygorteen after 1864

The Farrell's were of Coologe  &Carriganagh

l will do some further research ..

  • I forgot to add that the local church in Bansha village is Church of the Annunication,  and the parish priest  Rev.Michael Hickey,

    Local Graveyards are

Bansha - partial transcript of headstones on http://www.theirisharchives.com/articles/view/14/Bansha-Cemetery-Co-Tip…

Kilaldriffe - partial transcript on http://www.igp-web.com/tipperary/cemeteries/cem_kiladriffe.htm

There are other nearby graveyards in Aherlow , Cordangan , Golden , Carriganagh, Kilshane where Bansha people were also buried . St Michael's cemetery in Tipperary town opened in 1913 . Prior to then - folk tended to be buried in their family plot - usually nearest graveyard to ancestral home - I have a feeling that a visit to Carriganagh graveyard will be part of your holiday itinerary - but lets see what further research hails

    • Mary Griffin - Bansha and Kilmoyler
    • Keaty - Bansha and Kilmoyler - 1840+

I noticed the very helpful replies recently to an enquiry about Bansha Parish and also noticed a reference to the Church of the Annunciation noting that sponsor was Keating.

Previously I posted the above enquiries. In my research I did not realise there was another Bansha Parish Church and have only investigated Kilmoyler....

So, I am hoping for some expert advice from local volunteers.

Thanks to all who replied to my query re Connor/O'Connor - I'm not sure how to reply individually.

Cordangan - can you please advise where you found the references to the baptisms of siblings Cath and Ellen.

Also the marriage of Ed Cart and Mary Farrell - does this suggest Ed's name was changed to O'Connor, or just that it has been transcribed incorrectly?

Cathy - thanks for info re Daltons, and B&B - I will be contacting both of them.

Once again - thanks to all - really looking forward to my visit.

  • Hi All

    In response to your questions

This parish has 2 churches 1 in Bansha village and another in Kilmoyler -

Church of the Annunication, Bansha  http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=TS&…

Our Lady of the Assumption, Kilmoyler

Most country RC parishes in Ireland have 2 or 3 churches - parishes may have been combined at some stage or an extra church was built to cater for those not living within reasonable walking distance of main church .

All baptisms and marriages performed within this parish were noted in parish registers . The registers were transcribed from the original  by the Rev J Hayes PP in 1948 and are available online at http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0245

The Graveyards in Aherlow , Cordangan , Golden , Carriganagh, Kilshane are now owned by Tipperary CoCo . No online listings of yet but contact Support Staff:

    Hi all,

I wlll be visiting Tipperary late July, researching the O'Connor/Farrell connection, and have contacted a local, who was recommended by one of the posters on this site.

He is doing some research for me, prior to our visit.  Unfortunately he is having trouble locating the exact location of the Carriganagh graveyard.

Is anyone able to assist with this?

    Many thanks

    John O'Connor

  • Hello all,

I am related to this family

John's GGG grandfather James is brother to my Edward O'Connor!

I would love a volunteer to help me sort out the problem of our surname

The marriage of Ed Cart and Mary Farrell - this suggests that  Ed's name was either

    -a misspelling

-changed to O'Connor from McCarthy as

What does the name McCarthy mean?

    loving

    Mccarthy Name Meaning

Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Cárthaigh 'son of Cárthach' a personal name meaning 'loving'.

So O'Connor was incorrect, our surname is actually (o' or Mac) Cárthaigh

Also I found in a list of Names and Addresses of Peace Commissioners in Co. Tipperary

    McCarthy, Edward

    Main St., Bansha, Co. Tipperary.

Could this be our earliest ancestor Edmund O'Connor from Bansha Tipperary

    More O'Connors

    O'Connor, Michael W.

    Scart, Clogheen, Co. Tipperary

    O'Connor, Daniel

Rockwell, New Inn, Cashel, Co. Tipperary

    Also noted some O'Farrells

    O'Farrell, John

    The Square, Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary

    O'Farrell, Michael

    Cooladerry, Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary
