My great great great grandfather John Maher/Meagher was born in Towland Knockshearoon, Co. Tipperary, North Riding and my great great great grandmother Mary O'Brien was born in the Townland Cooleen, Co. Tipperary, North Riding. They were then married in the Borrisoleigh Catholic Parish in 1830. John Maher died sometime before 1842 in Ireland. According to the Borrisoleigh Catholic Parish Records, they had four sons:

 Patrick Meagher
b. 17 Mar 1831 in Knockshearoon, Borrisoleigh, Tipperary
d. 28 Jun 1903 in Westford, Dodge, Wisconsin, USA

 William Maher
b. 1833 in Knocksheroon, Borrisoleigh, Tipperary
d. 1907 in Victoria, Australia

John Maher
b. 7 Jun 1835 in Knockshearoon, Borrisoleigh, Tipperary
d. ?

Martin Maher
b. 1839 in Borrisleigh, Tipperary, Ireland
d. 19 Jul 1899 in Mount Edgerton, Victoria, Austrailia

I am very new to researching in Ireland. I have been wandering the lanes of the region on Google Earth, but I know I will not learn the history that way. Where would I find more informaton about the Parish of Borrisoleigh as well as information about the Townland Knockshearoon and the Townland Cooleen? Is there a good resource for learning more about the Towland's history or the Borrisoleigh Catholic parish?

I would appreciate any guidance with my search.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

If you are interested in a pre-famine description of the area I always find Samuel Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of Ireland helpful. It is a free resource available here: http://www.libraryireland.com/topog/B/Burris-O-Leagh-Kilnemanagh-Tipper…

Borris also has its own community website and Historical Society who have recently published a local history of faces and places (2004): http://www.borrisoleigh.ie/community.php?name=group

  • Anita,  I know both locations and if you want to google map look for Fantane or Mountkinane Borrisoleigh.

There is nobody living in Knocksharoon (modern spelling) now  I  can send you pictures of the remains of some houses there but do not recognise the family names I could send you a farm map showing remains of old houses if you like   PM me on maryryan2189@gmail.com for further info.  Cooleen is about four miles from Knockshearoon and neither would be googlemapped I think!

IF I can be of further help get in contact.

  • Late YDNA improvements and the most recent outcomes present the likelihood of checking antiquated faction connections in the territory. For instance, it is fascinating to thoroughly analyze the full range of our write my assignment online outcomes with those for the Ely Carroll land venture.
