Hi, I'm looking to find out if anyone has done a family tree or has some information on the Lonergans and/or Flynns in Mortlestown, Outrath, Cahir and/or Ardfinnan?
My GG grandmother was Mary Lonergan, b.circa 1837 - d.1902, who married Thomas Flynn, b. circa 1834 - d. 1915. They lived in Kilmolash lower and they had 8 children:
• David b.1862 in Ardfinnan
• Cornelius b.1863 in Ardfinnan; godparents - Thomas Lonergan and Bridget Lonergan
• Bridget and Johanna/Judith b.1867 in Mortlestown
• Catherine b.1868 in Mortlestown
• Thomas b.1870 in Kilmolash
• Margaret b. 1873 in Kilmolash
• Michael b. 1875 in Kilmolash
Seeing as their children were born in three different townlands/parishes and the family settled between both Mortlestown and Ardfinnan it seems likely that there were Lonergan and Flynn family connections in these two places but because both surnames are quite prevalent in these areas it has been difficult to decipher which family branches we fit into.
So, if any of this information resonates with anyone and you think you might be able to point me in the right direction I'd love to hear from you.
Thank you,
Eleanor.

Hi, Your gg grandmother was born in 1837 and baptized on Christmas Day, December 25th, 1837, in Ardfinnan Roman Catholic Parish. Mary's parents were Cornelius Lonergan and Johanna Migrath (spelled Migrath on the baptism entry but possibly McGrath.) Sponsors/godparents were John Murphy and Catherine Migrath. Here is the record: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632091#page/89/mode/1up
Except for the Mary Flynn noted above, the naming of the children generally follows the traditional Irish Naming Tradition. Here is the tradition: The first son is name after the father's father (in your case David Flynn.) The second son is named after the mother's father (Cornelius Lonergan.) The third son is named after the father (Thomas.) On the female side the first daughter is named after the mother's mother (Johanna Flynn?) The second daughter is named after the father's mother (Catherine?) The third daughter is named after the mother, in this case, Mary. However, this seems to have been the first daughter's name so I can't explain this anomoly. Anyway, good luck on your search! Rob Anglinrobanglin

Here's an update. Thomas Flynn (spelled Flinn in baptism record) was baptized in Ardfinnan Roman Catholic Parish on December 24th 1833. David Flynn and Mary Quinn were Thomas' parents. John Prendergast and Bridget Quinn were the sponsors/godparents. The priest was P. Walsh. Here is the original record: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632091#page/89/mode/1up
