The Clonoulty RC records start in 1804 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0256 Like most parishes in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly the records are not on Roots Ireland. However, Find My Past has some records and I located a possible marriage record in 1819 for a James Mara and Judith Coffee (see below). I've seen Johanna and Judith interchanged before. Is this too early? I searched for baptismal records and the only one I located was for a Margaret in 1840 (see below). I would scan the parish register for the baptisms for the other children. The 1850 Griffiths Valuation records for Clonoulty show a James Mara in Clonoulty Churchquarters.

Thanks - I had found the Griffiths entry and thought I was on the right track as the death certificates various family members who migrated to Victoria indicated that they were born in Woodford Tipperary which I tracked to the Murphy family property at Clonoulty.

I believe the marriage date you found could be my ancestors as the eldest child that I know of  - Bridget, my gg grandmother - was born abt 1822. Also the birth registration for Margaret could be one of my family members. The records I have seen relating to her have three different birth years - death certificate, headstone and emigration ranging from 1839 to 1843 - so 1840 makes sense to me. I will do some more hunting to see if I can find other family members. Thanks for the hint about Judith/Johanna.

Do you have any suggestion about how I can look up police force records for Michael? He became quite an influential person in the Roman Catholic community in Melbourne.

I was interested to read this information about James Mara who is my 4 time great grandfather through his daughter Margaret who married Thomas Smithwick in Australia.

For the marriage of James Mara and Judith Coffey you provide a link to the Clonoulty parish registers and a date of 22 Feb 1819.  I cannot find that marriage in the register for that date or any date in 1819 nor for February from 1814 to 1820. I was also given that date by the Tipperary Family History Research Group some years ago. I may have missed the entry somehow but would be verygrateful if you could show me where it is.

The Tipperary Family History Research group also found the baptisms of Honora on 27/1/ 1822 (perhaps Bridget), Mary in 1824, John in 1825, Kathleen in 1828 , Michael in 1829, Thomas in 1831and Margaret in 1840

Coffee / Coffey family appears many times in the Parish of Clonoulty. It is worth trawling through the Parish register as advised because you will get the Sponsor or Witness names too. The first register is not too big and once you have your "eye" it is easy to find this name with the exaggerated 'C' ?

This name is closely associated with my Crowe and var names

Stuike / Turraheen being principal townlands in Clonoulty for me

You may need to cut and paste the text of my records to search for the Coffee / Coffey names?
