Alice Deady of Kilmacow married Patrick Strapp of Fethard in Newfoundland in 1817 after migrating there 1812.  I'm looking for any information on either ones family.  The Strapp name may also be Strap or Strappe.

  • Eric:

I looked at the Tithe Applotments listings www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie

There was one Strap record in Co. Waterford and then three Strap records in Lismoylan townland in St. Johnstown civil parish in Tipperary. St. Johnstown parish is just to the northeast of Fethard parish.

I checked for Deady records on that file in Co. Kilkenny. There were six records in Kilmacow parish although a couple could be duplicates.

I also checked for an Alice Deady baptismal record on Roots Ireland around 1800 in Co. Kilkenny but found no record.

  • Hi Eric Strapp,

To help you research your Strapp ancestors:  I've run into the Strapp name a number of times in the early part of the 1800s, while researching my Morris and Norton ancestors in the area near Fethard.

Because Fethard is in the same general area, and Strapp is an unusual name, I would assume they are your ancestors, related to your Patrick Strapp who immigrated to Newfoundland in 1812.

I’m assuming you’ve already checked the records for the Fethard Catholic Parish?

    1. Here is a link to a site on Killenaule town (a few miles north of Fethard), which lists some church records with the name Strapp in Mullinahone (about 10 miles from Fethard) - for a Michael and Elizabeth Strapp (married in 1818) and their 10 children:

    2. Like Roger McDonnell, on the Tithe records (1823-1837), I found several heads of households with the name “Strap” in Lismoylan in St. Johnstown Civil Parish – Michael, Richard, James – which is nearby.

    3. A probable 3G granduncle of mine, Edmund Morris and his wife Margaret Strapp lived in Crohane near Fethard. They had at least three children baptized in Ballingarry Parish, Patrick in 1815 and Mary in 1817 and Catherine in 1820.

Although my Morris ancestors were in Crohane at this time, I don’t know where my probable 3G grandaunt Margaret Strapp came from – but I’m sure not far.

All the same general locale.  Mullinahone is about 10 miles from Fethard, 6 miles from Crohane.  Lismoynan is also near Fethard, Crohane and Mullinahone.

I found this message on the message boards for mullinahone.net, but it may no longer be there.  It refers to the same family as the previous link:

"On Feb. 2 1818 Michael Strapp married Elizabeth Campbell (Betsy) AKA O'Carroll In St. Michaels RC church, Mullinahone. This couple produced 10 children 5 of which I have recorded in the USA. I am looking for any info on this clan in Tipperary County. Michael’s parents were John Strapp and Elenor Mara or O'Mara. Other names connected to this family in the area were Duffy and Maher and Bartin. James Strappe married Bridget O'Sullivan Jan 12 1866. Any help along these lines would be appreciated, Michael”

    Hope these clues help!
