  • Dear Kerrie:

Welcome to the Ireland Reaching Out message board!

You may find the Aherlow parish register helpful to you for your research.  It is available online through the National Library of Ireland.  You should note that the parish straddles both Counties Limerick and Tipperary.

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0264

The parish register covers the years from 1810 - 1872.

I have found a baptism record for a Kennedy Noonan dated 26 February 1815 with parents listed as Kennedy Nunan and Eliza Ryan.  It is listed in the parish of Galbally & Aherlow County Limerick.  The reference to the register is listed below:

    https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632715#page/50/mode/1up

The entry is mid-way down the right side of the page.

There are also 3 other references to a "Kennedy Nunan" born in Galbally parish in 1844, 1867 & 1871.

1844:  11 Dec.  Kennedy Noonan and Cath. Casey were the parents.

1867  10 Sept. Patrick Noonan and Margaret Beckham were the parents.

1871 April  Patrick Noonan and Ellen Casey were the parents.  The residence townland was Lissard.

These baptism entries are available for free on the NLI website which I have given you the link above.  They are also available as transcriptions through the Roots Ireland website where you pay a fee to view the transcribed registers.  You may find Roots Ireland useful for your research.

I have also checked the register for other children of Kennedy Noonan and Eliza Ryan.

Margaret born 1810 residence is given as Ballymalloe.

Matthew born 1813. Residence is Knockballymalloe.

Matthew born 1817 (second one--first probably died).  Mother's name is listed as Mary Ryan.

William born 1819 Kilross is residence.  Mother is listed as Bridget Ryan.

Bridget born 1824 no residence given.  Again Mother is listed as Bridget Ryan.  It is possible that this could be another family.

For children born to Kennedy Noonan & Margaret Landers:

    Ellen born 1828

    William born 1830

    James born 1832.

You should note that all the baptisms are listed as being in County Limerick.

In addition, you may also find the Civil records helpful which are also available online through the Irish Genealogy website.

    Jane.

  • Dear Jane thank you for that information I am familiar with most of it. Just wondering if you could help trying to find my great great grandfather's birth in 1836 to Margaret Launders/landers and Kennedy Noonan his name was John I did find Ellen, William and James but no John. Their names are on his death certificate in Australia. Could it be possible that it was another parish close by. I have searched some of the records and cannot find him. He named his first son William so I am wondering whether that is him and he changed his name for some reason. We would need to find out if William's middle name is John. We believe he arrived in Australia in 1860. I am really baffled about this and have searched everywhere I can think of. He named one son Kennedy and his daughter Margaret so we believe they are truly his parents. Hope you can help.

  • Hi Kerrie:

You may need to take out a small subscription to Roots Ireland in order to search for the baptism record for John Noonan.  It may not exist or it is possible that it may have taken place in another parish.

You can also try searching for free through the NLI registers as I had noted that site above.  They have a map feature which can be very helpful in trying to look at neighbouring parishes where John may have been baptised.  It was not uncommon for baptisms not to be written down as very often, the priest travelled out to the countryside, and might not have written the numerous baptisms done when he returned, or did not note all of them.

It would seem to me that if his parents were listed as Kennedy and Margaret, then that is good confirmation that he is part of that family.  Is he buried with others in Australia?  Have you checked probate records in Australia that might mention him as a sibling?

Let me know.  Unfortunately, for many of us researching, not having a baptism record, can be frustrating.  Pre-1864, it is the only record to tie an ancestor to a family.

Did you have a look at the Civil Records online for Dennis who died in 1868?  The records should be searched for him as he is after the beginning of Civil Registration (1864).

Good luck and please feel free to contact again if you have any further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
