I am looking for information on John Lonergan from Kilfeacle Parish, Tipperary. He was born 1815/1816, came to America sometime during the famine years and ended up settling in Vermont, USA. That's all I know! thanks.

  • Hi Barbara,

The TimpteRyan public member tree on ancestry.com has the 1880 US census record which has John aged 60 so born 1820 or 1819. (The census was done on 1 June each year so he might have had a birthday in 1880 or he may not!) Of course, on www.rootsireland.ie/ there is a baptism/birth record for John Lonergan in 1819 & another in 1820!!

At the end of each record on rootsireland there is a magnifying glass which you can click on to search by parish. Kilfeacle is not among the parish options but it is in South Tipperary and both the 1819 & 1820 records are from South Tipperary so I couldn't eliminate 1 that way!

The records cost on rootsireland but it would be interesting to know if the 1819 & 1820 records are the same one - which does happen - or whether they are 2 different ones.

Of course, if you have good reason to believe that it is an 1815/16 birth all thses suggestions are out the window and there are lots of records for hime for thoses years too.

  • Sorry if you are getting this twice. Something happened when I was mid-way writing this message! Thanks for your response.Anyway, John Lonergan left Ireland sometime during the Famine. I have found him in the US Census for 1870 and forward living in Rutland County Vermont USA. We are pretty sure of birthdate in Ireland (1815 or 1816) based on family lore and headstone. We have no info on his parents' names. Family story said he came from Kulinane in Ireland. There is no such place! On Vermont headstone it says he was from Stleacle County Tipperary. This spelling is wrong of course (John may have been illiterate and so his children told the engraver what they'd heard or the engraver just got it wrong). I found a book by Murphy which says that it should probably be Kilfackle or Kilfeakle. That's all I have to go on!
