Looking for any information on Edward Sweeney, born about 1817, in Tipperary. He married Honora

O'Shea in the Cathedral of St Paul (Minnesota, USA).  The parish register lists Moangarriff as his

home in Ireland.  His father was possibly named Michael.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish for Kilgrant civil parish is Powerstown. Records for that parish go back to 1808.

I looked on Roots Ireland and Find My Past and did not find a record around 1817. You can look at the register to see if you can find the record. The closest record was in 1823 in Templemore RC parish way considerably to the north of Powerscourt.

Also, I did not see a Sweeney record in the 1825 Tithes or the 1850 Griffiths for Kilgrant parish.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing. Possibly you will match someone who has more info on the Sweeney family.

  • Dear Audrey,

I am a direct descendant of Edward Sweeney. He is my 2nd great-grandfather. If you are interested in learning about his descendants in the US, I am happy to tell you what I know. I have a family tree on Ancestry.com which shows all of the family history that I know.

Concerning his life before he came to the US, however, I know nothing. I only know his home town, Moangarriff Tipperary.

I would love to know anything about the Sweeneys in Ireland! If you feel that you could share anything, or point me in the right area to look for records, I would appreciate it very much.

    Best,

    Constance Sweeney
