Good morning. Have reason to think that Catherine Houlihan (my g-g-grandmother) was born 1841 in Killaloe, Monsea, Tipperary to Michael and Nora/Honora Houlehan. Catherine is buried here in the USA with her husband, Thomas O'Dea (b . 1826 per death records). While they both were born in Ireland, not sure where they were married and not sure when they immigrated to New York.
I am confused about the area in Ireland. Is it in County Tipperary or County Clare? Did it change over time?
The information I received on Ancestry.com shows a baptismal record from Killaloe, Monsea May 1841.
Suggestions for further search of that family to see if it is a real connection? Is O'Dea a popular surname near the border of Clare and Tipperary?
THANK YOU!
Ann Marie

Welcome back! We exchanged messages when you posted a message in December.

Can you share the baptismal record you located on Ancestry? I don't have access to the Ancestry World service. I did check Find My Past and did not see the record you mention.
Killaloe is a civil parish and RC parish in Co. Clare and also is the Diocese in the area covering parts of Co. Clare and North Co. Tipperary. Monsea is a civil parish in Co. Tipperary.

Good morning, Roger. Catharine's baptism on 30 May 1841 is on the lower left side of the page I tried to download for you.
The page information is copied as follows:

The information is from Ireland Catholic Parish Registers 1655-1915 files. Looks like the sponsors were Michael and Honor Kennedy? The entry is two lines long.
Are you able to open the attachment?
Thanks-

I missed this record on Find My Past because I did not ask for variant spellings of Catherine which just shows that when you search for records always hit the search for variant spellings for first and last names.
After examining the register, I don't think this is the record for your Catherine. I believe this child's parents were Michael Kennedy and Honor Kennedy and the maiden name for the mother is not shown.
Normally a priest would show Catherine of Michael Houlihan and Honor Kennedy but for this register at least around 1841 the priest was showing the surname of the father and the married surname of the mother (hope this makes sense.)
The sponsors were Michael Wheelehan (likely Whelehan) and Honor Houlehan. Michael and Honor Kennedy lived in Prospect townland which is in Cloghprior civil parish to the northeast of Monsea.
Ancestry and Find My Past collaborated in trying to establish a searchable data base of the records on the NLI Catholic registers. They used some kind of software to scan the records and create the data base. In many cases, they made mistakes and I think this was one of them.
Please come back to me with questions or if you don't agree with me.

Hello, Roger. As a retired teacher, it will be my pleasure to share the error with the folks at Ancestry. I see how the two line entry confused me......and it might have confused the machine that brought the entry to my attention as a possible match!
Of course, I had hoped it was a connection! Searching for the Michael and Nora O'Dea/O'Day who had Catherine in 1841 is a challenge because I am not sure WHERE in Ireland they lived.
Thank you for all the work and explanations to clear up this issue for us!
Best wishes for a fun weekend!

Good morning, Roger! Have picked up this family branch again......and found an error in what I wrote to you.
It was Michael and Nora Houlehan/Houlihan who had a daughter Catherine around 1840. The O'Dea connection was when Catherine married Thomas O'Dea (on some side of the pond).
Just putting the correct names out there......perhaps someone will notice? It is a new day......
Happy New Year!
