Bergin-Curley, Rathnaveogue, Tipperary

Hopefully, someone local will respond to your request. I live in Maryland. According to my reference book, Ballygorteen is in Corbally civil parish which is in the same general area as Rathnaveoge and Bourney civil parishes. I've included the 1850 Griffiths head of household listing for that parish. No Curleys listed but there are two Bergin records.

I also looked at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp on the National Archives site. There was a James Curley who lived in Ballygurteen townland in Bourney parish probably around 1826. It may be the same James Curley who went to America. The source record is very faded. I'm wondering if Ballygorteen/Ballygurteen changed parishes at some point.

Roger  -  Thanks so much for your input.  Yes, that Jas. Curley in Ballygorteen is "the one".  As I mentioned, my branch of the Bergins is lucky to have been associated with the Curleys (the name is almost exclusive to Roscommon & Galway) as it gives us a region in which to start, ie. Ikerrin barony. We would otherwise have been directed to a townland called Barna in th North part of Tipp. South Riding.  Then again, perhaps they were in Tipp SR when my GG GF was born - 1815.  Hmm...  this gives me pause.  I'll have to think about this.  Thanks again,  John Bergin

I am part of the Bournea Reaching Out Group that we set up a few months back. Sorry for the delay in responding to you. I can?t offer you any more information that Roger has giving you on the Curley connection. Our next meeting is on the 3^rd of Sep and we will discuss your post at that meeting and see if anyone can give us a lead. Ballygorteen is in the parish of Corbally between Bourney and Roscrea parishes and we have a few people in the group living in Corbally parish.  My wife is Bergin from Behagloss and her family originated from Boolareagh Bournea.  I have done her family tree but didn?t come across any Curley connections. As for your question on Barna being the same name as Bourney/Bournea, it could be a mistake on the headstone.

Thanks Tim.  Don't think it was a mistake on the stones.  In past I've toyed with the idea that since Rathnaveogue is close by & is part of the Catholic union of Dunkerrin that the reference was to Barna (as in Dunkerrin-Moneygall-Barna) but why then did they refer to Barna parish, Co Tipp?  Anyway I look forward to hearing what you have to say after your meeting.  Maybe I'm connected to your wife.  By the known Irish naming patterns of that time we suspect that my GG GF's parents were John & Margaret Bergin & they would have been born circa 1790.  Regards to your wife.  Thanks, John Bergin

PS: Did you know Seamus O Riain, the author of Dunkerrin: a parish in Ely O'Carroll ?  I think he was from Moneygall.  Perhaps he's still alive.

I am a great great great grandchild of James Curley. The one that was married to Catherine Bergin and moved to the United States in 1841. I am currently in the process of trying to organize a 175th anniversary family reunion and I have been trying to find any information on him prior to coming here from Ireland. I have not been having any luck, since you said that you have been researching this for 30 years I was wondering if you might have any further info.

Hi - Looking to find the parentage of Mary Annie CURLEY b.c1824, IRELAND

Mary Annie CURLEY m. John ROACH (date unknown) and in Sep1851 a daughter Anne was born in Wem., Shropshire. John ROACH, Mary Annie and Anne ROACH left Liverpool in the SHACKAMAXON, arr. South Australia. The Shipping Record says John ROACH was of Wicklow, Ireland and daughter Anne died at sea (possibly of Scarlet Fever).

Does anyone know of Mary Annie CURLEY?
