I have always found the family of Robert Collisson in the Dunkerrin parish records.  Interestingly, when Robert showed on the TAB's as being in Long Orchard, I went searching the Moyne & Templetouhy parish records thanks to the NLI putting the records online.  North Tipperary does not have these parish records transcribed on their site yet.

Much to my surprise, I did in fact find Robert Collison and wife Mary O'Mara having what I believe is their first child baptized in the records.  Bridget Colosson was baptized Nov 11, 1810 to Robert Colosson and Mary Mara.  Robert was listed as being from Old Town Faima?  I'm unsure of the spelling.  The sponsors were John Colosson and Julia Miry?

Robert goes on to have two more children baptized in this parish before disappearing from the records.  I assumed then around that time is when he moved to the Dunkerrin parish (various locations) as I pick-up the remaining children born to him there starting around 1820.

Hanora Collasin was born in 1812 to Robert, of Corrig, & Mary Mara.  Joseph Moylan and Anne Kennedy were sponsors. Next was James b. 1813 and at this time Robert was of Long Orchard and the sponsors were Arthur Kennedy and Anto Collison.

As I continued looking through the records I found Robert Collison as a witness to the marriage of Denis Dwyer and Sally Collison on Feb 20, 1807, but I did not notice any children to this couple in the records.

The Joseph Moylan that was a sponsor to Hanora being born in 1812 turns out was married to an Ann (Nancy) Collison. They had two children baptized in the records before disappearing.  Catherine b. 1811 and Mary b. 1814.  It stated Joseph was of Templetouhy at the time.  A James Collesson was a sponsor to Catherine.

Lastly, the Anto Collison as a sponsor to James Collison's baptism in 1813 might be the same Anto Collison found married to Patrick White.  Their marriage occurred in 1814 with Patrick Whyte, farmer of Moyne, marrying Anastatia Collison on Jan 27, 1814 in Templetouhy.  The witnesses were Thomas White, William White, and James White with a note that all were brothers.  I believe James White may have gone on to marry Judith Cantwell in 1814 and found at least one child named William b. 1826.

Patrick White and Anto Collison had 3 children in the parish registers, Bridget b. 1818; John White b. 1820 (He was of Lisilisy - I'm sure I have recorded the spelling of location wrong) and Mary White b. 1822.  I did not find the family in the records past that time.

Just wanted to put my information out there in case it may connect with others researching in the same region with the same names.  I have traced Robert Collisson and wife Mary O'Meara through to their migration to Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada and then the children who moved onwards from there.

Sincerely,

Susan O'Meara

  • Dear Susan

    Welcome!

I hope that others researching the family name will be in touch. We find increasingly that the Message Board is becoming a repository of sorts all by itself and as the weeks pass it gets bigger and bigger. Thanks for taking the time to add what you know so far

    Best wishes

  • Thanks for the warm welcome Clare!  It's an exciting time to be involved in tracing your family tree in Ireland.  With the NLI putting the scanned images online, coupled with the searchable records in the rootsireland database, I am able to start making some serious progress on the family tree.  It's something I wouldn't have imagined I could do from overseas even just 10 years ago.

Now we can add to those records the Ireland reaching out site which allows us to connect with others and it makes a fantastic combination.  The ability to have messages board for a given parish, rather than an entire county, is quite a wonderful approach to connecting back to Ireland.

To top it all off, I am hopeful that the growing popularity of DNA testing in the genealogical world will also aid us in making connections previously lost from the lack of early records in some areas of Ireland.

Since my connection to the Templetouhy parish is still new, I hope to learn more about how my family came to locate in this area for a time.  As I learn more about the families mentioned in my post and how they connect the Templetouhy parish, I will be sure to post updates.
