I know my ggGrandfather came from Thurles because it is written on his Tombstone in St. Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. He left home alone, as far as I know, during the famine. Arrived in New Orleans (?) in 1852. Records I have seen show Fanning around places like Moycarkey, Two Mile Borris, and Horse and Jockey. I think his father's name was Johnothan and his mother's name was Catherine. I think he was born around 1838 and may have emigrated alone. He married Mary Maloney about 1854 in Cincinnati. I vaguely remember it being said that she was from an area within 10 miles of his home, even though he never knew her while in Ireland. Her parents were John and Mary who also came to America with other siblings. Any info or leads would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Many Fannings in the Thurles area. You didn't provide your great-grandfather's given name so we can search Roots Ireland.. Thanks!

Sorry,
My great-great-grandfather's name was Joseph Fanning. Thanks!

Dan:
Two possible records but I think we can rule out the first record because the father was Joseph. I think 1833 is more likely since he came to America in 1852. Moycarkey RC parish is just to the south of Thurles RC parish. Reaction?

Hi Dan My Fanning ancestors also come from around Thurles although I have not come across a Johnathon. I have put all my research on a web site www.fanningfamilyhistory.com you might find it of help especially if you are able to find the townlands Joseph cam from I am very interested in what you can find out about your Fanning family from Thurles as we may well be related. Good luck with your search Kathleen Fanning

Thank you Roger and Kathleen. I think the second record is probably a better match. He died in January 1895 with an age listed as 62 years. I am also interested in his siblings to see if he was related to any of the other Fannings in Cincinnati. That would answer why he came up river from New Orleans to Cincinnati. He landed in New Orleans on a ship whose origin was Mexico. I am thinking he worked his way over on the ship. Being so young when he came here, perhaps he already had a relative to join in America.

I need to revise the previous information provided about my great-great grandfather, Joseph Fanning. The age listed on his tombstone is 60 years which, if accurate, would place his birth in 1835. That age would have to have been provided by family in order to carve the tombstone. Since his wife, Mary, died later in 1906 she may have provided the age information. Newspaper obituaries from the time give several different ages for him which have a 10 year range. This two year variance could change the previously discovered results that you provided. The tombstone says he was born in Thurles.
Any revised information based on this new birth year would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Dan!
I went back to Roots Ireland and besides the two 1833 records, there was also an 1836 record again in Moykarkey but the father was Joseph.

Hi, can anyone help with info on Ellen Cavanagh born about 1839/40 in Thurles,Tipperary, Ireland? Her parents listed on her death certificate in Australia were John and Mary. Ellen married in Troy, Rensselaer, New York, USA in August 22nd 1855 and then arrived in Melbourne, Australia with her Norwegian husband Charles Peterson born 1828/33. Thx Mark

Thx Roger. So why wouldn't there be a John and Mary Cavanagh in Thurles, Tipperary, Ireland with Ellen as a daughter? That's the parents names on Ellens death certificate in Australia. Might Mary be a Maryanne or a Margaret, etc...? Maybe a search for a marriage of a John Cavanagh and a Mary... from maybe about 1830-1840. Thx Mark

Hi Mark Fetchitnow,
Had a look myself in FindMyPast.ie, RootsIreland.ie and irishgenealogy.ie just now.
Couldn't really find anything either. There is a hint here, which might be possible:
Ellen Cavanagh baptised 26 April 1840 to John Cavanagh and Brigid Baragry of Gortnadrum, Cappawhite, County Tipperary. … I have ancestors that would be Mary Brigid or Brigid Mary, and they would go by Mary or Brigid…. I have never seen that surname though. Cappawhite is < 30 km SW of Thurles. [https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000632675#page/122/mode/1up]
There is one John Cavanagh who married a Mary Kelly of Bourney +/- 10 years of 1832 in Tipperary, that is on 30 January 1842. I would think too late perhaps for your ancestor? [https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634665#page/109/mode/1up]
However, I am thinking now that your Ellen wasn't born in 1839/1840. Was she really 14/15 years of age when she married Charles Peterson?
Regards,
Sandra

Mark:
I found the same marriage record as Sandra did in 1842. I also searched for all Cavanagh children of father John and mother named Mary and there were a number of baptismal records but no Ellen records and none of the records were in Thurles until some records in the 1880s.

Thank you so much Sandra and Roger. She might've been 15 when she married in Troy, Rensselaer, New York on the 22nd August 1855. The ship from USA to Australia was named the Gertrude and has a E Peterson as 17 year old in January 1856. Thx Mark

I found a Bridget Barragry on a 1851 Census living in Lancashire, England with her older sister Mary Barragry, both unmarried. This could be Ellen's mother who maybe never went to USA with her partner ( Not husband ) in 1845 - 1855. Thx Mark
