I checked prior Flood messages but did not see any that involved Co. Tipperary.

Have you had any luck researching your 'Flood' ancestors from the Thurles/Templemore area? I have just been looking into this branch of the family tree and am struggling to trace the line back further. My direct ancestor Robert Flood married in Thurles 01 Dec 1849 to Catherine Walsh (another branch I am struggling to trace! Daughter of Laurence Walsh, a labourer). Father of Robert Flood is stated as L. Flood, also a shoemaker (first name of which I believe to be Luke, although this is not proven). He travelled to North Shields where his son Luke was born in Dec 1853, before settling finally in South Shields, Durham where he died in 1888. Two children born in Templemore; suggests he was a protestant though his children Thomas Flood b. 1850 and Mary b.1851 were found to be baptised in a Roman Catholic Church living in Pigfoot Lane. 

If you have found any information regarding this family I would much appreciate if you could share, I believe Robert Flood may be the son of Luke Flood born in 1812 Thurles, son of James Flood and Mary Maher in 1807 they were found to be living in a place called 'Loughtagalla' where James was working as a farmer. Together they had at least five children namely; Bridget born 1807 (who perhaps married John Flynn in 1834 Thurles? again not proven), James b. 1808, Edmond b.1809, Luke, and John b. 1815. Another Luke from around the same time was found to be convicted for manslaughter which was first reported in Drogheda  (quite some distance from Thurles) and sent to Australia in or around 1831; some have placed this Luke as the son of James Flood and Mary Maher; so not sure which if any is accurate.

Luke Flood born 1812 possibly had a son named Luke who married Catherine Murray (spelt 'Meany' aged 20; daughter of Thomas Murray, a painter). The marriage record indicates that Luke was the 'son of Luke, a pensioner'. They married 30 May 1863 in Thurles. A baptism record from 14 Mar 1863 Thurles suggests Luke Flood, renounced protestantism and was baptised 'conditionally' into the Catholic Church before marrying Catherine Murray.

Lauryn, What a pleasant surprise to receive your message. 

Over the years I have been in contact with numerous distant cousins here in the US, but have been able to confirm very little information for my 2GGF John Flood b. probably 1816, Tipperary.  A major stumbling block has been John's early death in 1861.  What little family history which survived pertains to my 2GGM Catherine McGoldrick, who lived until 1907.  The couple met and married in the US after 2GGM's migration from Caven, so that also provides no hints for family members left  behind.  

I still believe that James Flood + Mary Maher of Thurles are excellent candidates as the parents of my John, but have serious doubts that I will ever find confirmation in paper research.  I have mapped extensive shared DNA segments for American cousins descended from John + Catherine; but have yet to find any DNA matches in either Ireland or Australia which I can identify as being of the Flood line.   

Have you taken an autosomal DNA test, or know of any one who descends from your Flood line who has?   I would be more than happy to share any and all of my DNA research with any Flood descendants who have tested.  I do believe that this is going to be the only way to confirm our Flood family lines.  If we could traingulate just (1) test for other believed descendants of James + Mary Maher with the many results I have for my John's descendants, we would have our answer.
