I would appreciate any help I can get concerning the residence / placename at the time of Thomas Kennedy's baptism.  The baptism is dated 15 Jan 1800 - Baptism Place: Thurles, Tipperary, Ireland.  It looks to me like Ballanbrach, but can see no record of this place.  I will attempt to attach the baptism record.

Thomas is the son of Patrick?? (looks like a P) and Mary Sullivan.

Another question is  that I have searched for records of their marriage and nil so far, would it be so that all marriages then would not be a correct record?

Thankyou again for your help. What a wonderful service you are providing.

Regards, Kayleen

  • Hello Kayleen,

Thomas Kennedy was baptized during a time period in Irish history when surnames and place names were not yet standardized, and in many cases it is a challenge to determine what a place name written in semi-illegible cursive by a parish priest, really is.

Though it may not look like it in the baptism record for Thomas Kennedy, he and his parents were living in the townland of Mullaunbrack, which was situated in the Civil Parish of Thurles. See: https://is.gd/TyQW85

Mullaunbrack was also in the Catholic Parish of Thurles.

A Google Map shows that Mullaunbrack is 3.3 miles northwest of Thurles: https://is.gd/DMG3dZ

You can also see the location of Mullaunbrack on an Ordnance Survey Map from the 1837 to 1842 time period. The map comes from the GeoHive website: https://bit.ly/2UOVkAq

Concerning the marriage of Patrick Kennedy and Mary Sullivan, it is possible the record of their marriage doesn’t exist. According to the National Library of Ireland, Thurles Catholic Parish marriage records are available from 13 April 1795, while baptisms are available from 9 March 1795. See: https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0280

It is possible that Patrick and Mary had married before 13 April 1795. There is also the possibility they married in another Catholic Parish in County Tipperary. Marriages traditionally took place in the bride’s parish. I looked for the marriage of Patrick and Mary in other parishes in Tipperary but did not find it. This search took place at the Find My Past (FMP) website, which is primarily a subscription website, with the exception it does not charge to look for Irish Catholic baptism, marriage and burials or death transcriptions.

The search engine for the FMP baptism transcriptions can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/jnmqmuv

The search engine for Catholic marriages can be accessed at: http://tinyurl.com/jzylkjy

For Catholic Parish burial transcriptions go to the search engine at: http://tinyurl.com/j9qe5p9

You may have to register with Find My Past to search for baptism, marriage, and death transcriptions. Registration is free.
