Hello Thurles!

I'm trying to find the birth, parentage and marriage of LAWRENCE CARROLL, who, according to  British Army Service Records was born Thurles, Tipperary about 1819.  He joined the British 49th Foot in about 1840 and married Catherine Murtagh, probably while in Aldershot.  He also lived in Northumberland. He died 6th December 1894 in Kilmarnham, Dublin.

If anyone could help me find out more about his background in Ireland, I'd be enormously grateful.

Thanks,

Helen (gggranddaughter to Lawrence Carroll)

  • Hi Helen

The only birth/baptism records for Lawrence Carroll arond 1819 on www.rootsireland.ie/ are 1823 DUBLIN & 1827 LAOIS - none in Tipperary I'm afraid.

The parish of the Dublin record is KINGSTOWN R C

The Tithe Applotments (1823-37 & free) have 384 Carrolls in Tipperary but only 1 - Thomas Carroll - is in Thurles - 1833

    I couldn't find a marriage record.

  • Hi Col,

Thanks for looking.  Really kind of you.  I suppose either the info from the British Army was incorrect, or Lawrence was pulling a fast one.  On one of his son's census returns he gave his place of birth as Lepping, Ireland (or it was transcribed thus).  I only know 'lepping' as a slang word or a surname - is it a real place?

    Thanks again,

    Helen
