Corboy

Maureen:

The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for North Tipperary showed four Michael Corboy entries and likely there may be a duplicate. Since a son Daniel was born around 1850, I assume the elder Michael was still living.

Are you sure about Northern Tipperary? Could it be Southern Tipperary? Curraghpoor area?

Alan, I am reasonably certain Curraghduff is correct based on information I have gathered eg baptism certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates.  Along the way I was directed to a newspaper article (Cork area) where the families had been evicted along with others from this area.  A closer look at the Griffith Evaluation Reports led to an amended version which does not include these evicted families.  An irish connection says that in her family (Daniel Corboy) this story of the eviction is known to them.  She believes the Michaels may have moved to Waterford but I have not been able to find this paper trail. It is possible they rejected higher rents.  I have followed the Corboys who came to Australia but not their brother James.

However I like to follow all hints so will look at the Corboys in Southern Tipperary maybe they went there when they left Curraghduff.

Are sponsors at baptisms usually related to the child?

Michael Corboy and Ellen Ryan were sponsors at the baptism of my great grandmother Mary Tuite (Tuit) on 4 Mar 1833, daughter of Tim (Timothy) Tuite (Tuit) and Judy Ryan residences at Curraghduff and Killoscullyl-Ballinahinch.

Parish: KIlloscully. Diocese Cashel and Emly.  (Parish Variants Birdhill, Drumkeen,  Killoughscully, Newport and Birdhill, Newport and Killoscully, Newport and Killoughscully)

Mary Tuite married 1862 John Horan of Demone, Clonoulty, registered at Nenagh.  Under the assistance of the Queensland Immigration Society they emigrated to Australia on the Queen of the Colonies arriving at Moreton Bay in Jan 1963.  Both her parents (Timothy & Judy Tuite) were deceased before 1862.  I believe there were crop failures and food shortages in 1862.

Timothy Tuite was a farmer who leased two lots of land at Curraghduff and Ballinahinch. 

I am interested in what you have written however I can't answer your question.  I have revisited the Baptism record of our two descendant of Michael Corboy and Jane Hassett.  The sponsors for Michael were James Corboy and Mary Corboy, for D

aniel they were Michael Corboy and Nancy Hassett.  I would be interested to know if they were husband and wife or simply two significant friends of the family.  Our baptismal records indicates there were two senior Michael Corboys which I am interested in.  When viewing the baptismal records of Michael and Daniel I noted many Ryans on both pages and Tuite on one page.   I am guessing that if they were sponsors at a baptism they probably lived in the same area.  Another thing I am going to do is pull out the Griffith Evaluation Records I have as one notes quite a few families including the Corboys and the 2nd a revised version has a fewer families leasing the same amount of land.  I wonder if your Ryans and Tuite are noted on both or only on the 1st one? This was at a time the landlord were pressing for larger allottments to improve farming methods.  We suspect the Corboys and others made a decision not to pay the increasing rent and were subsequently evicted.

Hello, I'm Jenny and I have a great grandfather named Daniel Corboy. He was married in New Zealand, to Mary Ann Scanlan in about 1880 or so. Daniel is recorded on the marriage cert. as having a mother named Jane Hasset and a father named Michael. Daniel was a horse and coach driver in the Hokitika and Kumara area of NZs South Island. They had 1 child...Mary Jane Corboy, who apears to have been left at the Ahaura Catholic orphanage in about 1890 or so...aged about 6. I think times were very hard for many Irish emigrants who sought the goldfields out...in NZ. Would love to know more.
Originally I thought Mary Ann Scanlan was from the Rathkeale Castle Teskey crowd. However this isnt so. Mary Ann's Scanlen family seem unrelated to the Rathkeale lineage.

Hello Jenny, I continue to list your Daniel as a brother of my Michael based on certificates and batismal records.  There were clearly two Corboy families in Curraughduff near Newport North Tipperary prior to 1848. The heads of both houeholds are noted in the Griffith Evaluation as a Michael Corboy and a Daniel Corboy. The father and uncle of our ancestors.  They were evicted from Carraughduff in 1848, verified by an account of the eviction in a newspaper.  I have connected with people who belong to Daniel Snr's line, one of them confirmed that the eviction story is known in their family.   The Corboys moved to Clonmel and Waterford areas where some of them still live today.  There are two brick walls I can't break through. A brother to our Michael and Daniel named James.  James is listed as a third son on Jane Hassett's death certificate.  Secondly a Margaret Corboy who immigrated to Australia on the same boat as Jane Corbpy (Hassett) and Daniel.  Maureen PS Michael, Daniel and James are common across different generations.

I am following the Corboy posts with great interest. My 3rd great grandmother is Margaret Corboy who married Cornelius Rourke and raised a family in Roscrea Parish, Offaly and later lived, near the town of Roscrea, Tipperary, as per Tithe Applotment Books, 1821 Census of Offaly and Griffith's Valuations.  I have also located a baptism record for a Margaret Corboy dated 15 February, 1795 at Nenagh Parish. Her Godparents are Daniel Corboy and Judith Wiley. Her parents are John Corboy and Mary Quain. According to the 1827 Tithes Aplotment Books, there is a Daniel Corboy living in the Townland of Rossaguille, Kilnerath Parish (aka Newport), 18 km west of Nenagh. Possibly this Daniel is Margaret's uncle and therfore a brother to her father John Corboy.  Both John and Daniel are presumed born in the 1760's or 17770's.  This is my first post to the message board and I welcome any replies.
