George Carter was born in Tipperary in 1796 & came to Canada about 1819. There is a family bible with an inscription presenting the bible to "Our Esteemed Superintentent" from a Centenary School with the mention of the owner leaving to sail to Manitobia, otherwise the inscription is vague. In the bible it lists the marriages of George Carter & births/deaths of his many children. George Carter settled in what is now Ontario where he married at least 3 times & had 15 children. Family stories have it that George Carter was decended from a Gilbert Carter that served under Prince William of Orange. Gilbert started as a Sergeant but was promoted to Lieutenant by the Captain of the Guard after killing a Rallo Rudolph who was believed to be intending to kill the prince at a sports day. He was again promoted, this time to Colonel by Prince William of Orange himself once he heard of the incident. Colonel Gilbert Carter fought at the Battle of the Boyne. According to the stories, after William became King he gave Gilbert Carter an estate in Tipperary within sight of the Rock of Cashel with a grant stating "To the Gilbert & George Carter's, as long as the grass grows & waters run"
