I'm trying to find information about my grandfather, William Francis Dorney. I know he was born in Tipperary around 1884 or 1885 (he died in Whitehaven, Cumberland in 1968, aged 84). I would love to know something about his parents. I know he married my grandmother Annie Main White in 1919, in Cumberland, but I haven't been able to find out if he came to England on his own, or with his family, or even whether he played a part in WW1. Annie and William (Bill) had 7 children - 2 were twins, my mother Margaret and her sister Sheila. It would be great if someone out there knows something about Bill and his family of origin!
Thanks,
Kay

Kay:
I could not locate a civil birth index record for William from 1882-1887 in Tipperary. I checked the 1901 census and found a 9 year old William who was a stepson to Timothy Dorney in the town of Thurles.

I expanded the search and found three William Dorneys in Co. Cork. One 18, another 19 and the last 10. Of course William could have been in England by 1901 so you may want to check the 1901 census in England.

Hello Kay,
I went to www.rootsireland.ie and searched for your william . I found a baptismal record for William Dorney in the CIVIL parish of Ballingarry in 1884.
You would have to join this site (free membership) and pay to view this record (about 5 euro).
I don't know what parish church he was babtised in as the record is a civil one. You could go to www.askaboutireland.ie and look at the griffiths valuation for family Dorney.
Hope this helps you,
regards,
