I don't know anything about William Phelan and Catherine Day's immigration to Canada. I do know they settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia and given one of their sons, according to the 1871 Canadian Census, was born in Ireland (c) 1838 and another born in Nova Scotia in 1843, leads me to believe they immigrated sometime between 1838 and 1843. I don't know the shipping routes at that time and whether they sailed via England or direct to Halifax or via Quebec or the US. Does anyone have any ideas on the possible routes into Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from Ireland?
Both William and Catherine were Roman Catholic. William's death record clearly states he was born in "Tipperary" as was Catherine whose record shows "Co. Tipperary."
Any additional help would be very much appreciated.

Can you give me the name of their child born in Ireland and we may be able to trace them from that?
thanks,

Hi Anne,
I am not sure I have all the children but so far the one born in Ireland around 1838 was James Phelan, the next, who I am descended from, is John William Phelan, born 1843 in Halifax followed by Patrick E. born about 1845, also Halifax - at least accordinging to the 1871 Canada Census. I appreciate your help.

Kelly,
I found a baptismal record for James Phelan, father William Phelan, mother Catherine Day. It is in Co. Waterford in 1843.
You will see that Counties Waterford and Tipperary share a border and some of their records are recorded in both counties. You'll have to open the record to see what parish this record belongs to .

Hi Anne,
I looked at the baptismal record you suggested and it was for James Phelan, baptized 19 Sep 1843 in Parish KILL, Co. Waterford, RC but the parents are listed as William Phelan BUT Catherine DEE not Day. I don't think it is the right family. James' brother, John William Phelan, in addition to the 1871 Canada Census, the 1901 Canada Census also says he was born in Halifax (albeit with a birth date of 11 Jan 1842 which is incorrect as his Nova Scotia Death record says he was born 11 Jan 1843, in Halifax, Nova Scotia ) so it is unlikely James would have been baptized in Ireland in 1843. Clearly then William and Catherine should have been married in Ireland if they brought at least one child we know of over to Canada.
Any other ideas?

Hello Kelly,
I am related to Day's in Waterford and Dee is a variant of Day. I too saw the record Anne found and thought this might be your family. I followed the thread as a branch of my Day family had lots of Phelan sponsors on their records, they were from Carrickbeg.
I know when I found my many Waterford roots my elderly relatives were sceptical as they were told our Day and Crotty family were from Tipperary. I also have found a record for my Kerry family stating one was born in Cork, she was born in Killarney.
I would certainly look into this, the Diocese of Lismore encompasses Tipp. and Waterford. My motto over these many years of research is never say never!
Good luck,
Helen

I am a great grandson of John William Phelan and Annie Parks. Their daughter Alice MArie Phelan married Micheal Joseph McGrath on June 21, 1917 in Truro Nova Scotia. They lived in Halifax Nova Scotia where my family still reside. I would be interested in sharing any information on the family.
