My great grandmother was Margaret McBeth who married my great grandfather James Alexander Brown in 1881 in Straban. I know nothing about the Mcbeth family and would like to find out more if anyone has any info or connections Thanks

  • Hi again,

Our volunteer has come back with the following suggestions based on the information you have provided. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Unfortunately CADPRO has given us almost no information that would enable help to be given.  I have no information myself on either of these families.

What has CADPRO done already to research the McBeth & Brown's?

What religion were the McBeth and Brown's?  This might at least narrow the field done a bit.

Looking at Family Search on the Latter Day Saints website the marriage referenced in 1881 is given.  I suggest that CADPRO should contact GRO Belfast or Roscommon to get a copy of the marriage certificate.  This should give the name of the fathers of the bride and groom, together with their address and ages etc.  From then on it's a question of following the lead from there.  If it's available at Roscommon that would be the cheapest source.

If CADPRO are just starting out on the journey I suggest they Google and look at:

Donegal Ancestry Guide to Researching in County Donegal (author Boyd Gray) UPDATED 4th Edition Aug 2012 (PDF download)

This says "Donegal" but applies to Tyrone and elsewhere.

Also, since the wedding took place in Strabane have a look at:

Good luck to CADPRO and hope this helps a little bit.
