James JOHNSTON married Anne KEARNEY on 18 Sep 1850.

Place: Omagh, Drumragh, Tyrone; Residence: Drumragh, Tyrone, Ireland

Both partners had fathers named John. Mother's names not given

James had previous military service which states he was born in the parish of Mullybrook??, Armagh; was attested for the Royal Regiment of Artillery at Armagh in the County of Armagh in 1826 at the age of 19 years. Discharged 1849.

Son John born/baptized June 1851; Place: Mullaghmore, Drumragh, Tyrone; Father occupation: pensioner

Another son, James Henry, was born before emigrating to Canada aboard the J&J Cooke vessel "Argentinus" in 1856.

Anne's father shows up with the family in Canada on the 1861 census as a widower but he did not travel with them.

I am attempting to find more family for this couple. Siblings, mothers etc

  • Mullybrook is likely to be the parish of Mullaghbrack, in Co. Armagh. If you know what denomination James was you may be able to search for his baptism there. Likewise what was Ann’s. She probably came from Drumragh and so you may be able to look for her baptism. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church. Drumragh Church of Ireland records start in 1802, but there are also Methodist and 5 or 6 Presbyterian churches in the parish. Copies of the surviving records are in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.

    Thank you for your input. I have found the surnames spelled in other ways.

    The dates you have quoted are somewhat different than the sources I have consulted. Marriage, ships list, censuses, death records.Therefore your people do not appear to be the correct ones but as yoy saya, worth a look.

    You could check the rootsireland site (subscription) to see if they are there. You could also write to the Vicar but be aware that the Church of Ireland charges something like £18 an hour if the Vicar agrees to do look ups (which many don't as it takes up too much time). Otherwise your only option is probably to pay a researcher to go to PRONI.
