I am trying to find out the parish that my great-grandparents came from in County Tyrone. Thomas Gorman and his wife Ann (Nancy) McQuaid arived in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada in 1836. A Patrick Gorman and his wife Ellen ? also arrived at that time along with their two children, Andrew, born in 1830 and Patrick born in 1834. We belive that Thomas and Patrick were brothers. Thomas was born around 1811 and Patrick between 1799 and 1806. Any help in finding this information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Unfortunately, most record sources in Ireland are based on specific locations, usually a parish, without which it can be difficult to find relevant records which would help determine the parish of origin.
There are some places where you can search online, however it may be difficult to discern whether the results are relevant to your family or not without more information:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
Do you know their parents names? If you did you could do a search for them in Griffith?s Valuation. This is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-1864. It doesn?t contain any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place.

You could also check the earlier Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838). However complete TIthe records for Northern Ireland are not available online but are held in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. For partial records of Tyrone follow this link:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/
You could also try contacting the Irish World Heritage centre in Tyrone for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: info@irish-world.com
I hope some of these links are helpful.
