  • Hi

Thank you for your message. Do you have any additional information regarding this family that may assist others in furthering your research?

Do you know much about their emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, Sydney, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin within Co Tyrone.

    Do you know their religion?

Most Catholic records are held locally - One site which might be of use is - http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ - where you can ?browse? an overview of available records per county. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance.

Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.  The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf

Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations: in local custody, in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm and at the Presbyterian Historical Society http://www.presbyterianhistoryireland.com in Belfast. PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society. For the rest of Ireland, almost all records are in local custody.

If you haven't already - You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp  or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/     or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/  for additional family members.

Some sites which might be helpful are:

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

  • Hi,

Is <beans> wanting to trace the McGinley family post 1852 in South Australia, .. or  is the question about the McGinley ancestors before emigration to Adelaide?

If the inquiry is for family within Australia, it may be theymoved to NSW or Victoria. What is interesting is the 1852 Ship List entry for the Sea Park shows a John and Nancy McGinley (http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/seapark1852.shtml) , but a check in the online index for S.A. Genealogy (http://www.genealogysa.org.au/resources/online-databases.html?) from 1852 to 1935 find no entry on "exact match" for McGinley, for births, deaths and marriage. A quick check on similar spelling (McKinley/ay, MacKinley/ay), and other variants) finds no obvious match for John & Ann (Nancy)

  • Hello,

Thank you very much for your reply and suggested links. The McGinleys were Catholic. We are unsure as to whether John and Anne departed from London or Plymouth and I guess our main issue is that we do not know which parish within County Tyrone they were from, hence our difficulty in searching records in Ireland and finding ancestors of John and Anne.

We will however look at the links you have provided and hopefully something will eventuate.

Many thanks again, appreciate your assistance and advice.

    Kind regards,

    Beans

  • Hello,

Many thanks for your reply. I am interested in the McGinleys pre Australia, and any ancestors in Ireland. Although the entry for the Sea Park does say John and Nancy, we know that it is John and Anne, not purely from the records but also from information found in the McGinley family bible, also the same information found by another branch of the family. We don't know how we go about finding which parish they were from, we are planning a trip to Ireland and happy to do the research once there but need a starting point.

    Thanks again for your assistance.

    Regards,

    Beans
