I have a a 257 yr old address that I am trying to pinpoint on a modern day Irish map to track the origins of my G-G-Grandfather James Tobin (B. circa 1832) and possibly his brothers Edward (?) and Patrick (B.circa 1834). James and Patrick immigrated to the states in the 1850s and ended up living in Washington DC for the rest of their lives. James married Mary Russell and Patrick wed Ellen Riley in DC. Their parents are unknown and where Edward ended up is also unknown. James put ads in US newspapers to find him, such as this one in the Boston Globe around 1859:
OF EDWARD TOBIN, a native of Newtown, parish of Ardmore or Grange (Co. Waterford), who left Martinsburg, Virginia, in 1855; when last heard of he was in Gravesend, Long Island, New York, and is supposed to have gone West. Any information will be thankfully received by his brother, James, corner of 2nd Street and Virginia Ave, Washington City, D.C.
It would seem that Newtown, parish of Ardmore or Grange (Co. Waterford) no longer exists. Not sure where to look next.

Hi Roger - Newtown is certainly a popular place name. But Ardmore is the right one. Thanks for the map - great stuff. Know of any sources for determining the RC churches in that area in the early 1800's?

Records are available back to 1823 :http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1090 The current church is St. Declan's and there is a long association with Declan in the area. http://www.waterfordlismore.ie/ardmore/

Thank you Nowel. Such a close match with James and Ellen. Patrick is a bit of a problem with an 1827 birth since the date on his tombstone (Holy Rood Cem. in DC.) is 1834 (which can mean nothing really) but I would have to get more verification from somewhere for the discrepancy. Church search page is terrific - more options to explore if I move out from Ardmore. The indexed parish records at RootsIreland are sure helpful when you can't read the good Father's chickenscratch in the originals. What really helps though is being able to find common parents for the siblings. I would go mad otherwise. I also found that Find My Past lets you look at theirs for free if you register for a free sign on.

I'm especially interested in your Michael Tobin born in 1837 anny further info would be greatly appreciated.
My Michael Tobin came to US, lived in NYC area and had at least one son James Buchanan Tobin born ca 1862.
He also had an Uncle Edmund or Edward who fought in the Civil War, and later moved in with kin on Long Island.
Look forward to hearing from the list. Thanks. Frank T
