Hello. I am trying to find details of David KERWICK born about 1789 . Married Bridget FOLEY. I believe their children were (some) Catherine, John David, Anne and Ellen. John David KERWICK migrated to Australia. I have looked at NLI Parish Records for TRAMORE. Would this be the correct Parish for the Family?. Either way there are only 2 Parish books and not for the possible dates.

I am trying to find birth and marriage of David and Bridget. David appears to have died 1875 in BallyKnock a widowed Farmer aged 86. (From Civil Records)

I am trying to find births of children etc.

Anyone also looking at David KERWICK and his family?

Regards Erin (Australia)

  • In 1863, Griffith's Valuation of Wateford showed the following David Kerwick in Drumcannon:

Source Surname First Name Townland Parish County

Griffith Kerwick David Duagh Drumcannon Co. Waterford

    Source: rootsireland.ie.

You can see more info at askaboutireland.ie.

  • Hello Patricia, I had located him in Duagh but cannot find records for his Birth, his wife's birth or death. Their marriage or birth of any of their possible children.

  • Duagh is in the civil parish of Drumcannon and the RC parish of Tramore. So you have been looking at the correct set of records. According to the John Grenham guide, that parish has baptisms starting in 1798 but there is a gap between 1831 and 1857 (the records were presumably lost). Marriages start in 1786 and appear to be complete.

So if David was born c 1789 that’s too early, and you won’t find a record. Bridget had evidently pre-deceased him by 1875. Death registration started in Ireland in 1864. If she died before that there won’t be a civil record, and most RC churches did not keep burial records. There is however 1 Bridget Kerwick death in Waterford registration district in 1868 aged 60. Ages were mostly guesses in those days and might be out by up to 10 years. Have you looked at that death? It’s not available free to view and you would need to order a pdf copy from GRO Roscommon to see it.

  • Roots Ireland has a transcription of the 1868 death record that Elywn mentioned in his response. That Bridget Kerwick was a widow who died in the Waterford workhouse so not your Bridget Kerwick.

  • Thank you all,

Trying to find the birth of David and Bridget children would seem to be an impossibility , given the gap in records.

I have been going through Marriages to establish identities of any children.  I haveso far found these Kerwicks:

    (1) CATHERINE ( B abt 1845) who married Patrick MULLINS in 1864. Tramore- She is of Ballykinsella Father David a Farmer. (Witnesses : Stephen Mullins and Anne KERWICK) Dead end with them

    (2) ANNE (B abt 1845) who married Robert POWER 1871 in Tramore. She is od DUAGH , Father David. Witnesses : John Power and Ellen KERWICK

    (3) ELLEN (B abt 1851) married Patrick KELLY 1881, Tramore. She is of Ballyknock , Father David dead.  (witnesses were  William KELLY and Bridget KERWICK) so who is this Bridget?

    (4) JOHN  David (B abt 1857) married Hannah BURKE in Sydney, Australia 1886. (Awaiting marriage details but families seem to have placed him with Parents David and Bridget )

There are some sizeable gaps between these children , but without any Parish Records it is a slog.

    Any ideas ?
