My G Grandfather was Thomas Plant. The best info that I have lists names of several areas, Ballyloughloe, Creeve, Mount Temple, and County Westmeath. He seems to have come to New York around 1850 to 1857 and settled in Pittsford, Monroe County. Thomas' year of birth is listed in several databases from 1832 to 1847. The only Birth month I have found states Janurary, but I am not sure of accuracy. The info I have states his death on Feb 25, 1915 in Pittsford, New York. And burial on Feb 27,1915 in Holy Sepulchere Cemetery, Rochester, New York. I am currently awaiting a copy of his death cert. I always believed Thomas to be an only child. Until recently I found a hand written note, in what I believe to be my grandmothers hand, that states that Thomas had sibling as follows: Thomas (Ireland), Sarah Sullivan (died 2/15/31), Joseph Plant, Humphrey Plant, Margaret Sloan, Anna Morris.
I have info that Thomas Plant married Ellen Murray on May 14, 1866 in New York State. It seems that Ellen came to New York at a young age, possibly 3 months from Ireland. Ellen's siblings listed on the same hand written note are listed as: Ellen Plant, Hugh Murray, John Murray, Rose Fay, Catherine Flanigan, Mary Barson, Sarah Farrell and Dae(Doe, Dar, Dae)
Census reveal that Thomas and Ellen had either 8 or 9 children of which 7 survived after birth. Known to me are: William 1886-87, John 1867-68, James H. 1873-74, Sarah A. 1871, 1872, 1876, Joseph M. 1875, 1877, Margaret (Marguerite) 1879, Leo F. 1882, 1883. Leo is my Grandfather and I have info that he had a twin that died at birth.
I was born late in my Dads life and had very limited connection with his family. By the time I realized the importance of heritage, it was too late to get information from the older living relatives. Once I discovered the importance of my Irish roots, Dads sister refused to discuss any family history with me. Now I wonder if there is something in my family history that would make my aunt feel concern or embarrassment of the past. I am aware that Thomas came during a time of extreme hardship for most of Ireland but cant help wonder if there is more to our story.
To anyone that reads this, my burning dream is to discover as much history as I can about my Plant heritage, visit Ireland to touch the ground of my G Grandfathers birth. Although my DNA has many nationalities, I have always felt that I am Irish.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. I hope someone might have some information to share with me I would love to make any connections.
Trish
Someone suggested to me that a transcription error may have been made in the records of Thomas. It shows John Plant and Margaret Murphy as his parents. I received Thomas Plants death certificate and that states Humphrey Plant as his father. Since other family records had an error, ( in the same records, Hubert Plant was listed as both the father and the child, when Humphrey was, in fact his father) I'm wondering if John was actually an older brother of Thomas. Is there any way to check if Margret Murphy and Humphrey Plant had a son named John. Also I am looking for any marriage records and death records for Humphrey Plant and Margaret Murphy Plant. Thank you all so much for your help. Trish

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Creeve is a 980 acre townland in Ballyloughloe civil parish which is in southwest Co. Westmeath near the Offaly and Roscommon borders. The RC parish is Ballyloughloe/Moate/Kilcleagh. I looked on Roots Ireland and found a Thomas Plant baptismal record in 1835 in Ballyloughloe, Parents were John Plant and Margaret Murphy. I also found an 1840 baptismal record for a Mary Plant with parents Humphry Plant and Margaret Murphy. Since the mothers names were the same possibly John and Humphry were the same person. Transcriptions for both records are below. There is also a link to the online parish register which you can use to search for other Plant records. I also provided a link to the 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of householdlisting for Ballyloughloe civil parish. You will note a Humphry Plant in Creeve townland.
Let me know what questions you have.

Trish,
I found the following records on rootsireland. There were 8 children listed for Margaret Murphy and John/Humphrey Plant. There seems to be a problem finding them on the national library parish register site. I've emailed to find out why.

Subject: Re: RootsIreland.ie User Enquiry [#675044] roots records not matching parish register??Query No 11788/16
Dear Anne
Thank you for your email.
Roots Ireland have passed on your query to us here in Dún na Sí Amenity and
Heritage Park in Moate, Co Westmeath. The reason you are experiencing a problem viewing the Parish Records
pertaining to Ballyloughloe is because the National Library never
microfilmed the registers relating to this church.Ballyloughloe belongs to Moate Parish. Moate Parish consists of the St
Patricks church in Moate town, St Ciaran's church in the village of
Castledaly (the two churches in Moate and Castledaly are known as Kilcleagh)
and Corpus Christi Church in the village of Mount Temple (this church is
known as Ballyloughloe).Unfortunately when the National Library took the parish registers back in
the 1980's for microfilming the registers belonging to Mount
Temple/Ballyloughloe were missed. Due to this even though the National
Library website states it has images of the registers pertaining to
Ballyloughloe they do not. The National Library only have the registers
relating to Castledaly and Moate (Kilcleagh).I have raised this with the National Library, unfortunately there is little
that can be done now as the church is unlikely to hand over any of its
registers in the future. The only way for you to view the originals would be to seek permission from
the Parish Priest of Mount Temple. Should you have any difficulty it may be
possible that we may be in a position to assist you and gain access to the
registers. Please do not hesitate to contact me here at the Centre if I can be of any
further assistance.Kind regards

You are all truly wonderful souls. So much of this is truly useful to me. Further research I believe I found my Thomas' father and Grandparents. The Latin spellings of the names gave me a bit of a problem but I believe I figured it out. My Thomas' dad appears to be John Humphrey Plant married to Margaret Murphy and JH dad appears to be Thomas Plant married to Hannah Monroe. Found that Thomas and Hannah had at least 3 children. Helenam 2/Nov/1798 Female, Elizabetham 19/apr/1800 Female and Joannem 15//Oct/1801 Male. But I still need to confirm. I get so excited it's hard to have a good thought process. I found a lot of Petty Session info in Humphrey Plant. Found a burial notation for Hannah, wife of Thomas that had a marker placed by a Humphrey, brother in law. Also a Michael Plant turns up in a burial notation. Would love to put this all together and and figure it all out. Thanks is so much, any additional info for confirmation or questions to look at are most welcome I am truly having a great time discovering my family. Trish Plant Woolston

Also to note. I'm not too sure what the Petty Sessions are all about. If anyone has any explanations I would be grateful. And does anyone know if I have family still in Ireland. Thanks, Trish

Update to original post.
Someone suggest to me that the information on the records may have included an error in the record for Thomas Plant. The record stated that his father was a John Plant and his mother was Margaret Murphy. I have since received The Death Certificate for Thomas Plant. It states that his father was Humphrey Plant. Since there was an error in his brothers transcription, Hubert Plant, naming him as both the father and the child, I am curious to know if there is a way to check to see if Humphrey Plant and Margaret Murphy Plant had a son by the name of John. In addition I would like to know how to get information on the birth, marriage, and death of Humphrey and Margaret. I have searched many resources and am not having any luck. I also noticed that there was a Patrick Plant that was a sponsor to Thomas Plant at his Baptism. Any info on him would also be greatly appreciated. I am so happy to have found this site. It makes me feel a little as if I am touching the homeland of my G Granddad. Thank you so much. Trish

Trish:
Anne already looked up all the children for John/Humphrey Plant and there was no John. I checked Roots for a marriage record and none came up for the couple. FYI there was an 1832 marriage for a James Plant and Ellen Murphy in Ballyloughloe. I don't think the baptismal records would be available since Ballyloughloe starts in 1824.
Ballyloughloe civil parish is in the Athlone registration district. I found two civil death index records for a Humphrey Plant which are below and also one for a Margaret Plant (below). You can get copies of these records from the General Register Office for around 4 euros each. If you need instructions, let me know. Likely your Humphrey is the 1813 but you can't be sure.
