  • I have posted on the Westmeath page about my grandmother Julia Mulligan.  Since then I have learned that she may have siblings, one being Peter born in 1864 which would make him about the correct age for your Bessie's father. Julia's parents were Edward Mulligan and Mary Fagan- which is why the sister with the name of Mary also fits.Apparently there was alot of intermarriage between Mulligans and Fagans in Westmeath and eastern Longford.  I am working on getting the parish records for the births of Julia and her siblings/parents' marriage.  At this point all I know is that it is theRC  parish of Castpollard.

    If any of this is of interest, I can update you with what I have found.

  • Her parish was Ballymore in Westmeath (the town with "two ends and no middle" -- the people in the middle having gone to live in Argentina) but her townland was Forgney in Longford.

    Here is the list of the children her parents, Michael and Bridget Leaden Mulligan, had;

    Parish of Ballymore (Co. Westmeath) RC Church -- Births
    (Towland:  Forgney, Co. Longford)
    Michael and Bridget (Leaden) Mulligan

    • Patrick, b. April 1847, p. 22, to Michael and Bridget Leaden
    • Michael, b. October 1848, p. 25, to Michael and Bridget Leaden
    • Mary (Ann), b. March 1851, p. 28, to Michael and Bridget Leyden (my great grandmother)
    • Margaret, b. December 1852, p. 32, to Michael and Bridget Leyden
    • Bridget, b. May 1855, p. 37, to Michael and Bridget Leyden
    • James, b. December 1857, p. 43, to Michael and Bridget Levy
    • John, b. December 1857, p. 43, to Michael and Bridget Levy
    • Elizabeth, b. September 1860, p. 55, to Malick and Bridget Ledden
    • Elizabeth, b. February 1866, p. 68, to Malick and Bridget Ledden
    • Patrick, b. October 1871, p. 86, to Malick and Bridget Ledden

    Notes:  The first Patrick and first Elizabeth must have died young; there are a few different spellings of Leaden (their descendants that I'm in touch with live in Mar del Plata, Argentina); Mary and her sister Margaret emigrated to Massachusetts where I'm from, married brothers Daniel and Patrick Nihan from Cork and lived next door to each other, the rest stayed in Ireland; Bridget ("Winifred") married Michael Lee and some of their children emigrated to MA as well.

  • My Mary (Fagan) Mulligan was married to Edward in 1859 in Coole, RC parish Mayne in Westmeath.  So we are, sadly, not interested in the same person. Although I speculate they had a daughter Mary born between 1860-64 who immigrated to NYC and married Samuel Kerwan. The Mayne church records are missing for those years so it has not yet been confirmed except that the parents were in Oldcastle Meath in the 1901 and 1911 census where they state they have 9 living children, Mayne church records do have 7 births from 1864 to 1878.  Mary and Samuel had a daughter Margaret who did not marry. Also living with them was Mary's brother Edward Mulligan who is about the same age as the Edward child in the Mayne records. My mother and her parents lived next door to them in the 1920 NYC- Queens census.

    The children of Mary and Edward baptized at Coole include Peter (1864), Edward (1867), Julia- my grandmother- (1869), Catherine (1871), John (1874), Daniel (1876), Bartholemew (1878). Catherine and 'Bartle' were with the parents in the 1901 census, Bartle still with them in 1911.  A possibility is that Catherine is the 'Katie' Mulligan who married in Oldcastle in 1903.
