I am trying to find out more about my great grandfater, John Mahoney Herlihy, DOB 06/26/1827, in Newtown, Cork. I believe he had siblings Patrick (b. 1823), David (b.1829), Mary (b. 1833) and Elizabeth (b.1836). His parents were Maurice Herlihy and Mary Mahoney. John left Ireland in 1859 and settled in New Hampshire, USA.
I would like to try to connect John to Herlihy's who live in Newtown Shandrum. Dromina Killabraher may also be part of the address. They live on the property that my research tells me, John left in the 1850's. I have been in contact with them but have not been able to trace the family. I believe their great grandfather would be John's brother.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there
My name is Doreen and I am working with the Ballyhoura area in the Ireland Reaching Out Project. It is worth looking up http://www.historicgraves.com/graveyard/killabraher/co-klbs, and also http://www.historicgraves.com/graveyard/shandrum/co-shan. I know there are Herlihys buried in Kilabraher and almost certain in Shandrum graveyard. So have a look, and hopefully this will be of some help to you. Historic Graves is a nationwide survey of Graveyards in Ireland where the graves are digitally recorded and uploaded onto the web where you can easily view them.
Regards Doreen.

Hi Claire,
I very recently became aware of your online query on the Herlihy Clan at Killabraher, Newtown, Charleville, Co Cork.
My name is Maurice Noel Herlihy, born 26/11/1945 married with 3 daughters. I was born in the old Herlihy Farmstead in Killabraher which is the subject of your query. I haven't done much research on the Herlihy Genealogy but I can give you details from my Grandfather, Maurice Herlihy right to the present day.
You can also get a lot of detail from Census Records of 1901 & 1911 which are digitised. You can this at www.censusnationalarchives.ie
In addition my brother John who lives on the family farm at Killabraher told me recently that he had a visit from an American Tourist who claimed that his ancestors left the farm in Killabraher for the USA during the Famine times around 1845. As the Americans weren't able to pronounce the name Herlihy, he said they changed the name to Hurley which was easier to say. He also claimed there are now circa 1,500 American Herlihy/Hurleys who can claim a link to Killabraher.
Claire I spent about two hours on this website setting out family names eats and on each occasion I lost it. My email address is mnherlihy@gmail.com
please contact me directly on this email & let me have yours and I will give you as much detail as possible. In any event I would like to research Herlihy genealogy myself.
best regards,
Noel

Hi Claire: I just recently found this site and saw your post. I am curious is you found any further information on Maurice Herlihy? I believe him to be my 2x Great Grandfather through his daughter Eliza Herlihy Sweeney. I have some information on her brothers John Mahoney Herlihy and David J Herlihy as well as sister Mary once they get to New Hampshire (which I'm sure you've already uncovered), but I have no experience tracing roots back to Ireland. So, I'm at a bit of a road block with Maurice and wife Mary. Hoping you can shed some light. I am assuming that both stayed back in Ireland with other son Patrick?
Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gena

Hi Gena,
John M Herlihy is my great-grandfather. (Henry Patrick is my grandfather and Walter Henry is my father) We have Maurice traced back to Shandrum, Killabraher North, Cork, Ireland. The only date we have for Maurice is a wedding date to Mary Mahoney on February 23 1819. He also shows up on the Griffiths records in Killabraher.
I have been to the property in Cork and we are trying to gather as much information as we can for the Herlihy's in Cork before me make another trip to Ireland.
Are you in New Hampshire? I moved from Somerville, MA to Detroit years ago but I'm back "home" several times a year. (We are actually in Seabrook, NH right now.)
My daughter Alison (Kreft) and I are on Ancestry.com.
I look forward to hearing from you!
