Hello. I am an American living in Ireland and my ancestor was Thomas Conner (1765 - 1828), a Catholic, of Kilrane Parish. We believe his parents were James Conner and Patricia Stafford Talor.

He emigrated from Kilrane Parish and settled in western Pennsylvania in what is now Clarion County. By the year 1800 he had become the founder of a town known locally as Conneration. He eventually was the patriarch of large Conner family. I remember visiting the Conneration cemetery with my parents and grandparents when I was little. There has always been great interest in this ancestor, and one of my cousins has book called "Conneration" written by another Conner descendant.

While searching further I've found that some of my family's stories about Thomas Conner could not be true. We believed he emigrated in 1798 as a result of the rebellion. But I've learned that he got married in Pennsylvania in 1796, so that must be wrong.

These are questions that I have, although I understand it may not be possible to answer them:

1. When did he emigrate and why?

2. Did Thomas Conner have brothers and/or sisters, and do we have distant cousins now in County Wexford?

3. Was his mother's surname really "Talor"? There are only of handful of Talors in the 1901 and 1911 census records and these could be misprints. Is this another way of spelling of "Taylor"?

Any clues would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi Lee Anne,

Thank you for your message. I hope that someone is able to shed some light on your questions.

With regards to the surname Talor, it is difficult to know if this is just a misprint/misspelling. I did a search for Talor in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records recorded 1823-1838. There were some Talors recorded in them:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=talor&firstname=&county=&parish=&townland=&search=Search

However, in the later land record Griffith?s Valuation (1848-64) there were no Talors, this is illustrated on the Irish Times website:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=

Yet, as you mention in your post the name resurfaces again in the census records..

Have you tried looking in church records to see if you can find any information about possible siblings? Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Kilrane/Tagoat parish, follow this link:

Unfortunately, records only begin in 1853. However, in the19th century new Catholic parishes were created so starting dates can sometimes be misleading. Many parishes changed their geographical spread so you may find earlier records relating to your family in the records of adjoining parishes:

  • Thank you so much. I will consider the name Taylor as well when I'm searching. Thank you for the link to the Irish Times page for church records. That looks like the perfect place to start!

  • Lee Ann,

Hi, I'm Susan Muzio Conner, ex-wife of Cliff Conner. I live in Ohio and am trying to write a continuation of the Conneration book Warren wrote 30 years ago.

I can't imagine living in Ireland! You are so lucky! You must have already gone to visit the old homestead, directions given in Warren's book. We desparately need someone to check out the names listed in the St. Ruan's Church Cemetery (unmarked and completely overgrown) book, Memorials of the Dead by Brian Cantwell, which is housed in the Univ of Dublin, James Joyce Library. In that publication the cemetery is listed as Kilrane Old. You could also visit the Parish Church to see if the Priest can assist your research.

Please keep in touch with me and I will share any additional information I uncover to help us find out more about Thomas and his family.

BTW--I have located Thomas' sons, Peter and Nicholas's whereabouts and can share that privately with you.

Please email me at "susan@delvalle.org" and I will respond immediately.

    Have a wonderful day!

  • Greetings Lee Ann and Susan,

My mother (Maxine Wills, maiden Maxine A. Conner/Martin) traces her ancestry to Thomas Conner from Kilrane.  As Susan mentioned, my mother also has the Conneration book by Warren Conner.  My mother's father was Claude Conner.  After her mother died, she was adopted by her grandfather Roy E. Martin, after she had lived with her uncle/aunt George and Edna Fair in Parker (Clarion County).

I have been trying to find the parent names of Thomas Conner to also further my own research.  As far I can tell the reason why Thomas may have come to America from Kilrane may have to been to get away from the Penal Laws in effect at the time around the time of the Irish Rebellion of 1798.  It was in 1802 that the town of Conneration (modern day area of Parker, Pennsylvania in Armstrong/Butler County) was founded.

Would love to trade information.  Just had my mom out to the Dublin Ohio Celtic Festival where we obtained some information on both Galway and Wexford Counties in Ireland with information on the 1659 census.

    Sincerely,

    Mike Wills

  • Just an update.  Thomas Conner is listed in the 1790 United States Federal Census for Huntington (page 9 of 12), Pennsylvania.  So that mean he emigrated to the United States before the Irish Rebellion of 1798.

Mike Wills:  I am just now reading your post from 2016......please contact me.  I am writing a "continuation" of the CONNERATION book that Warren Conner wrote and published in 1985.  I know who Thomas Conner's parents were as well as his siblings.
