Hi. My ancestors originally came from Wicklow. John Critchley was born 1802 in Avoca and was married to Ellen Kavanagh on 19 Nov 1826 in the Redcross Parish.

His father was Joseph Critchley (or Critchly).

John & Ellen emigrated to South Australia in 1852 with their 6 children.  I have the information about their life here in SA, but would like more info about their life in Ireland before they emigrated.

Thanks for any help.  Cheers, Jenny

  • Hello again Jenny!

Redcross parish is also known as Avoca. Here is the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0460

Do you need us to find the baptismal records for the six children?

  • Jenny:

I went on Roots Ireland (subscription site) and found five records Michael 1832 Henry 1835 Anastasia 1837 Patrick 1840 Richard 1845  I would have expected some children between 1826 and 1832.

I would go on the parish register ( see link previously provided) and go thru the records to see what you can find.

  • Hi Roger,

Thanks so much for your info.

I've got James in 1828 and John Bennett in 1829, then Michael in 1834, Henry Benson in 1835, Anastasia in 1837 and then Richard in 1845 - so yes, they're quite spread out in their ages.

I have a Patrick born in 1841 to Michael Crritchley (John's brother) & Margaret Kavanagh in Avoca too - I wonder if this is the same Patrick you're referring to? It's such a common name and because both mother's are Kavanagh's, are you able to check further into that one?  I've had a look in the link you sent, but it's not easy to find.

Any help is greatly & kindly appreciated.

    Cheers, Jenny

  • Jenny,

I have a son of Michael Critchley & Margaret Kavanagh named James Critchley dying in Connecticut USA in 1878 aged 46 per the death record. I am interested in finding out more about the Critchley family.

    Best Regards

    Padraig

    Hello Padraig.
Your James is a different one to mine, it appears.  Mine is James Owen Critchkey, son of Michael Critchley & Margaret Kavanagh (they must be popular names for couples! )

James Owen was born in 1837, but died here in South Australia (in a town called Callington) on 9 May 1886. He married Eliza McCourt on 3 October 1867 in South Australia and they had 8 children.

Michael & Margaret arrived in South Australia, with their children, in August 1854 - aboard the Lord Raglan.

  • Thanks Jenny,

It does seem to be a coincidence to have the same parent names at the same time, possibly in the exact same area. Critchley is a rare name in Ireland. I have seen some Critchleys in Dublin at the 1830s/1840s but not matching the parents names.

Where can I learn some more about your family line? (Ancestry or others?)

    Regards

    Padraig
