My great great grandparents, John Garvey (1821-12/18/1893) and Margaret Marinan (1824-1/24/1876), departed Kilkee, Co. Laois in 1849 for the USA. I do not know where from they sailed or landed. They lived for a time in Pennsylvania before settling in Davenport, Iowa. Many Garveys and Marinans followed them to Davenport. Among them were John's brothers, Michael (9/19/1827-7/21-1912) and Simon (1831-12/9/1899), and another Garvey, James, that I have not yet determined a relationship. James (1800-1/17/1870) was married to Mary Marinan (1810-7/24/1892).
Of the Marinans for most of them I have no departure dates or ports of departure / arrival. All came over between mid-1840s and 1900. Arrival date in ( ):
Patrick 1837-10/12/1909, married to Ellen Denahy;
Patrick 3/16/1828-5/16/1918 (1859), married to Catherine Marinan;
Catherine 1842-6/7/1904 (1864), married to Patrick Marinan;
Martin 1833;
Martin 1849-12/16/1893, married to Mary;
Bridget 3/1/1839-3/19/1923 (1850) married to Henry Cottrell, married to Thomas DeLoughery;
James 1798-1/7/1893 (1848), married to Mary;
James 1829-2/12/1902 (1850), married to Bridget Foley;
Mary 1840-7-8-1911 (1851), married to Abraham Cotterall
Michael 5/1928-8/19/1911 (1829), married to Bridget Marinan
Bridget 1832-5/15/1916 (1851), married to Michael Marinan;
May 1880-3/31/1916 (1899), married to Lee Quinn
Cornelius 1835-5/9/1921 (1856), married to Jennie Lawlor
Margaret, married to Thomas O'Brien

Hi Rory,
When a location of origin is known it has been Kilkee, or in one instance Milltown. Often obituaries or grave stones would simply state Co. Clare.
I have seen Griffiths. The 1855 valuation lists about 15 Marinans but linking them to immigrants to the USA has eluded me since rarely did obits list names of family in Ireland. And I have yet to find ports of departure / arrival records. One link is the close relationship they had with the Garvey family with some marriages in Ireland and more in the States.
Most of my ancestors arrived before Ellis Island opened, some before Castle Garden, but recent discoveries of a few people who came over in the late 19th century will lead me to those sites. Thanks for the reminder.
As to the Catholic parish in Kilkee I have had little success in drawing a response to a question on Marinan / Garvey marriages prior to 1849. A few years ago they were kind enough to reply via email, asking my patience due their very busy schedule. After several months I again emailed them and continue to await a response. FamilySearch.org will be investigated.
Your advice is appreciated.
Regards,
JD

Hello, John. I have MARNIN family in Adair, Iowa. Michael Marnin, aged 80 in 1910. My great grandmother was Catherine Marnin married to John Donohue (our spelling). Michael and Catherine were siblings. They came from Lismuse, Kilkee,Clare. Michael came to US, but Catherine did not. In 1911 she was with her son-in-law John O'Mara in Lislanahan. John and Catherine Donohue (donoghue in census) had children coming to US, only 1 daughter Margaret remained in Ireland and died around 1905.
Our Marnin family came from Davenport and settled in Adair Co., Iowa.
I was told on a message board that Marnin was probably Marinan, but I have nothing but our spelling to go on.
I have searched asmuch as I can, but have had no luck finding my Marnin family in Ireland. I do have one source that I am waiting for a response that might shed some light.
If you have not done so already, check out Iowa, Adair County, Summit township - 1910 census. There is Marnin, Michael living with his son. There is also MANION, Thomas (not related to Marnin).
If this sounds like anyone that you are searching, or if you have any info on my branch, please contact me.

Dear John: After I replied (below) I started searching for my Marnin family info and realized that I had e-mailed you
quite a few years ago about these same families. I tried to send a copy of the e-mail to refresh your memory, but it
failed to go through (e-mail address no longer valid). At that time, you indicated that there was a Marnin relative living
in St. Louis that was related to your Marinan family, and that you would try to get some additional info. Were you able
to get anything else? I dislike using this site as I find it very difficult (confusing) to use. Could you please contact me
at: vah_mom@hotmail.com ? note: there is an underscore between h and m, it doesn't always show up. Thanks
Veronica
