Hello, it's exciting to see the messages posted here by others with Irish ancestry from the area around Annascaul -- even Maumagarrane(!)

I am researching a branch of my family tree working backward from my grandfather, Maurice Kavanaugh (1912-1987). His father, also Maurice Kavanaugh, was born in Maumagarrane in 1883, and immigrated to California I believe around 1900. I am hoping to gather more information about the previous generations from Maumagarrane. My great-grandfather Maurice's father was Daniel Kevane (Kavanagh), who married Catherine (Kate) Griffin in 1869. I believe that Daniel had a sister Ellen, among unknown other siblings, and that their father was Laurence Kevane. I know there were several other Kevane/Kavanagh relatives around Annascaul at this time, in Boherbrack and elsewhere, and I'm having difficulty tracing the exact relationships with so many Maurices, Laurences, and Ellens in each family. Any leads would be gratefully accepted, thank you!

  • Kristin, looking over old queries, you are correct that Keevane etc morphed into Kavanagh in Kerry according to McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland.

Found a Maurice Keevane born and baptised in Kerry in 1883 mother Bridget Connor) often the O as O'Connor included just depends on the person at the time, parish Dingle which adjoins Annascaul, famous son is Tom Crean.

Civil Records from 1864 are here as are church records for Kerry, click on the icon and sign in, it is free, Annascaul has a gap in their baptisms from 1839 to 1851 which will hamper any searchs. Here is the initial link, for civil records the registration district is Dingle but the baptism is Dingle also.

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ and you can read parish baptisms here but only search by event and date (month).

    Please revert if still interested.
