My Irish ancestors emigrated from County Laois to Prince Edward Island, Canada in the early 19th Century.

John Kilbride, born parish Stradbally, around 1778, emigrated 1819? to PEI

married Mary Mahoney in 1812 Stradbally?

William Mitchell, born Ballyroan, around 1787, emigrated  PEI

married Mary ?

I'm looking for any info on them. I'd love to find out any info on their parents or their life before emigrating to PEI.

Thanks!

  • Hi, looking at old querie on the site and it is neigh impossible to find church records pre 1800 but the do exist in places and you can see the various parishes and dates on this site here but the search facility is only by date and event and a lot of difficul reading. https://registers.nli.ie/

You could start by looking at the Laois Library site under Local History, also local history groups are common now but often have not much online, the late 1700s was the introduction of flax growing etc and some work but othewise it was all farm labour or servants etc, Laois would have a lot of bog too so not all land was good and mostly owned by large absentee landlords, Penal Laws were in place and Catholic Emancipation did not occur until 1829, it affected Catholic landownership and transfer.

You may find some Laois genealogy and history in private Facebook groups also.

Actual records are few at this time.

    Regards
