My gg-grandfather, James Fleming (1878-1942), was the youngest child of Geoffrey Fleming (1827-1895) and Mary Fleming, nee Daly (1836-1910).  Geoffrey and Mary emigrated to the U.S. in July 1884 with their four youngest children.

Three older sons preceded them; John (Aug 1863-Dec 1947) arrived in August 1879, Thomas (Apr 1858-Sep 1942) arrived in 1880, and Bartholomew (Dec 1864-Aug 1927) arrived in September 1883. I have U.S. passport applications for Thomas and John indicating they were born in Castleisland.

Based on the 1900 U.S. Census, which asks how many children the mother has had, and how many are still living, Mary indicated she was the mother of ten children.  That would mean there are three more older children who chose to stay in Ireland, since there is no mention of them in the U.S.

I would like to find information about these children and their decendants.

  • Thank you, Joan!  What a wonderful surprise to wake up to.  At least now I know where to go when I finally visit Ireland.  My father and I were just talking about it.

  • Joan,

It's been a few years and I don't know if you're still helping out with Ireland XO, but I thought I'd trying contacting you again. I have recently connected with another Fleming whose ancestor hales from Castleisland. The ancestor's name was Garrett Fleming, born about 1831, with whom I have a DNA match. This made me think he might be a younger sibling to Geoffrey, born 1827. Also, a recent connection revealed a possible link to a David Fleming and Peter Fleming, but I don't know if they were from Castleisland.

I went to a cemetery yesterday, in Chicago, where I knew my father's grandmother and sister were buried, as well as other Flemings in our family tree. When the burial records were copied for me, I discovered my great-grandfather's sister (age 12), who died only a year after her arrival in the US, was buried in a family plot purchased by David Fleming. Obviously, this opened a whole new line of inquiry.

Any help connecting Geoffrey to Garrett, David, and Peter would be greatly appreciated.

The family tree of the DNA match for Garrett Fleming indicates Garrett's parents were Thomas Fleming and Ellen Murphy, and he married a Mary Morris, 28 Nov 1857.

  • Hi Julie, there were three Fleming brothers in Currow village, in the sixties and seventies, in parish of Killeentierna which borders on Cadtleisland. Their father had been Geoffrey Fleming from townland of Ranalough. They were John, Bill and Timothy aka Thady. Only Thady had a family. If you want to connect with present day relatives you can contact Tadgh Fleming on Facebook. He has a large following as he and his family create entertaining videos. He should be able to fill in family history facts for you. Good luck.

  • I LOVE his videos! I was wondering if there could possibly be a connection with the family when I learned they were from Kerry. Now, I have an excuse to contact him. Thanks for the information.

My grandmother was Nora Murphy.  Thady had 3 sons and a daughter.  Geoff, Nora Phil, Adrian and Dan. Dan is my father and now lives in Tralee. I know all the names you mention and would you believe Thady has 2 grandkids ( in their 50’s now) living in Chicago.  Let me know if you’d like to chat sometime.
