I am looking for informatioin on my great-great gradnfather, Jeremiah O'Shea. I know that he left Ireland sometime in the late 1850s as a young man. He filed an intent to be naturalized as a citizen of the U.S. in 1859 and married my great-great grandmother, Mary Ann O'Sullivan, is 1862 in Montreal, Canada.
His father's name was Patrick Mortimer O'Shea and his mother, who was deceased by the time he got married in 1862, was Johanna Sullivan. By the time he reached Canada, he was listing his occupation as a stone cutter or marble cutter. I did find one baptism is a town named Daurus for a Johanna Shea in 1857. I understand that it would not be unusal for an O'Shea to be listed as a Shea at the time. Significantly, the father was listed as Patrick Shea and the mother Johanna Sullivan, and one of the sponsers was Jeremiah Shea. However, the same parents had a son they named Darby, which I understand is a nickname for Jeremiah, in 1845. As near as I can tell, my relative Jeremiah was born either in 1831 (that's the date from his death certificate) or "around 1835," which is how he filled out his census report in the U.S. I doubt that they would have named two sons Jeremiah. I also don't know if someone would have been considered a sponsor when they were only two years old, which is how old "Darby" would have been when Johanna Shea was born in 1847. Any other explanation would be appreciated.
I know that Jeremiah came from County Kerry since that was the place listed as his origin in his marriage papers in Canada. I don't have a town, though. I found another Jeremiah O'Shea, whose birth date was listed as 1831, in prison records. He was convicted of "pulling and stealing potatoes" in 1853 and given 30 days hard labor. The prson was in County Waterford but the record listed his place of birth as Cloherron County Kerry. The charges were filed by someone named Power Esq. and Mr. O'Shea's occupation was listed as a "laborer." I understand the Power name is associated with a British family that owned much of the land in Waterford and wondered if he could have simply been sent to prision there even though he lived in Kerry. Don't know and any further information about the practices at the time would be great appreciated.
I've been to Ireland many times and biked through much of Kerry numerous times as well as a visit in the 1980s when President Reagan came to Ireland. I want to come back this year on my bike and would love to bike thought the town of Jeremiah's origin and learn if I still have any blood relatives in Ireland. Jeremiah had two sons in Canada, Patrick and James E., my grandfather. He also had sons Jeremiah, Bart, Charles and Harry in St. Louis and daughters Anna and Mary. He died in 1904 at age 73 and listed his occupation as a stone cutter all of his life. By the time I became interested in my Irish roots, my father, John, had died as had most of his sibiling and parents. So there' precious little record or memory on this side of the ocean. But I've spent my life and a journalist and vow to keep digging. Any help or hints from Ireland would be great.
Regards,
James O'Shea
great-great grandson of Jeremiah in Chicago .
