Just found my great great grandparents church marriage record through rootsireland:  James Grady married Maria Nolan on 15 Aug 1849.  Parish/district is shown as "Allen" and address is shown as Coolaght in County Kildare.  One witness was Edward Grady and the other witness was Richard Kelly.  Parents names not shown.

Also found the chruch baptism record for their first child:  Eliza Grady born 31 May 1850 (my great grandmother).  Same parish/district and address are shown on the record.  Sponsors were Patt Grady and Marcella Dowling.  Mother's name shown as Maryanne Nolan.  Father is James Grady.

Does anybody know the modern name of parish/district for Allen in County Kildare?  Any info on the address "Coolaght" would be appreciated.

These three people:  James Grady, Maria Nolan Grady and little Eliza Grady arrived in New Orleans, LA in February, 1853 on board the ship America.  The surname on the passenger list was shown as Gready.

  • Hi, thanks for your message.

I did some research on your query and have found the following information:

Allen is still the name of a parish in Co. Kildare, however the closest address of 'Coolaght' that I could find is near the parish of Kilmeague, Co. Kildare. You can see this on the map here:

     https://maps.google.ie/maps?hl=en&q=%22Coolaght%22&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&t…

Information on the surname Grady and it's distribution throughout Ireland and in Co. Kildare can be found on the irishtimes website at:

You can browse information on the surname on this page and can choose if you want to pay a fee for the surname report.

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you.
